Default go granny....

Quote:
An elderly woman has scared off thieves who were trying to smash their way into a jewelry store by beating them with her handbag.

A gang of six men, carrying sledgehammers and riding motor scooters, were attempting to carry out the robbery in Northampton yesterday morning when they were interrupted by the pensioner.

The scene was captured on video by a witness and clearly shows three men dismounting the scooters and smashing the windows of Michael Jones Jewelers.

They can be seen filling their bags with stolen goods in broad daylight as members of the public walked on by.

The elderly woman can then be seen running into the midst of the robbery, swinging her handbag and landing a blow on the face of one of the thieves.

The men, who towered over the lady, fled the scene immediately just as as staff inside the store managed to activate security shutters.

Witnesses then went to the lady's aid, managing to stop one of the robbers from escaping.

Four men aged 18, 22, 25 and 39 were later arrested and police are still looking for two other men.

Northampton police said the woman would be rewarded for her bravery. Her name will not be released publicly to avoid putting her in any potential danger.
For those who missed the video footage...
watch her start swinging here : http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/820...-store-thieves

Whats sad is that an elderly woman in her 70s thwarted a robbery, while everyone else stood about....

So if these guys turned on her and beat her senseless, it'd be alright because she "had a go"?

Don't get me wrong the outcome was good, but she obviously has no common sense to approach six guys with sledgehammers who are smashing windows and robbing the place.
I'm not giving the thumbs up to the people who were just walking by, but there is no need to be a hero in situations like this.

Call the police, record as much info about the people taking out the robbery as possible and give it to the police I say.

Granted she was lucky these fools were crims with at least a little bit of moral fibre in that they didn't belt her with the sledgehammer.

The white van nearly cleaned a couple of them up, that would have been even funnier.

Plus granted that they looked to be the pussy type of criminals as they basically fled once she started swinging that handbag around.

The sad thing is she's probably got more common sense than most people I encounter on a day to day basis.

Plus, she was probably thinking that she's had a good innings, she may as well go out with a bang.

Scooter is automatic, motorbike is manual. Must have been afraid of stalling or they cant actually work out manual? One of them stacked it anyway so whatever they tried to gain still failed.

Hopefully before leaving us she can inspire others and impart her knowledge of how to stand up for ones' self and not be a pussy in life.
Others should have gone in to defend the 70 year old from these so called men.

As for the nancy boys that did this, you can tweet from your cells. #Im so :-(

it may well have been a different story say if a 25 year old male tried intervening...

pretty easy to bluster up to another guy, but when a 112 year old granny starts swinging what are you gonna do? cant crack her, thats like kicking a puppy.

bet these guys get honed out inside too...

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

Its an old saying but its very true. Good on her for not doing "nothing". Our society would probably be a lot better place if doing "nothing" wasn't the first instinct for most people.

Is it just me or did the driver of the white Ford Transit Van actually try to knock one of the scooters over? He returned with his van to the scene to help as well.

The reason these guys where arrested so quick would have been because of the one they managed to detain. Well done to those that did something!!!

Handbag hero acted on 'mother's instinct'

Updated 2 hours 25 minutes ago
A British pensioner is caught on video foiling a gang of robbers armed with sledgehammers.

Ann Timson was captured on video hitting three of the helmet-clad robbers. (ABC)

A British grandmother who "clobbered" a gang of sledgehammer-wielding jewel thieves with her handbag credited her "mother's instinct" for spurring her into action.

Ann Timson, 71, was captured on video hitting three of the six helmet-clad robbers, causing one to fall off his moped as he tried to make his escape during the botched raid in Northampton, central England.

"I saw a kid run up to the doorway of the jeweller," Ms Timson said.

"Three lads followed him and when I saw their arms going, I thought the kid was being beaten up.

"My mother's instinct kicked in and I ran across the road shouting at the lads to stop it.

"As I got closer I saw it was a robbery, and then I was even more angry," the former market trader added.

"One of the gang shot off... I clobbered him with my shopping.

"I landed several blows against one lad... and brought him to the ground.

"He raised a hammer to me so I kept hitting out. It seemed to be over in seconds."

Four men have been charged in connection with the crime.
Well there u go... she thought they were picking on a little kid!!!
I still say she did well, shame on those who just walked past and did nothing...

The blokes could have freaked her out by yelling, 'BINGO!'

Sometimes the best COA is to call the cops. They won't do anything and the courts will allow these guys to be out on the streets with a good behaviour bond
