I just wanted to know how to remove/install the harmonic balancer. The only info I can find is in the B series section.
I know the centre bolt has to be removed. That's as far as my knowledge goes. Is a puller like the one for the B series required? Cheers. |

yes, EF to AU use specilised removal tool, which makes removel a piece of cake.

I got mine replaced today with a herrod motorsport, Cost $80 about an hr at my ford/fpv dealership. As i didnt have the right tools lol... tensioner takes up the slack so ya dont need a shorter belt either.

The puller is about $200. Is there a universal puller that could be used?

I used a 3" bearing puller form supacheap. the trick was to pull 2 legs off and engage them into the balancer first the reassemble the puller.

I used a 3 jaw puller. It's kida tricky. Need to take out themo's and radiator. To crack the 22mm bolt use a long breaker bar and rest it on the left (I think) support and hit the key. Don't start the car. And that cracks it.

This appears to be an old thread but I will throw in my 2 cents worth.
Last week I fitted a new balancer to the sons AU. First up you are doing it the hard way trying to pull on the outside of the balancer, you must pull on the inner area which is steel and not rubber mounted. This way you will not damage the timing cover or the timing lug. There is a puller available from Repco priced around $400 retail/$276 trade if you want to spend that much. I used a Tridon Harmonic Balancer Puller Set currently $37.50 part no. 254230 I then purchased from the local hardware three 100mm x 8mm cup head bolts. I put the bolts in the vice and turned 15mm of the threaded end 90degrees with a hammer to act as hooks. I removed only the thermo fans, not the radiator. I then removed the main bolt, removed the large washer, and refitted the main bolt for the puller to push against. The balancer will pull over the main bolt but not over the main washer. I then looked at the new balancer to see where to locate the hooked bolts. I then fitted the puller using a mirror to see into the balancer(little fiddly but not impossible) and pulled the balancer off. I then removed the seal with a hammer and small blade screw driver and fitted a new seal with a little gasket goo to the outer edge of the seal. I then fitted the new balancer as well as the belt and the thermo fans. Total time including two glasses of scotch-2 hours+ Cost- Balancer and seal $105 from Bursons. Puller and bolts$40 Total$145. Quote from Ford $660 which did not include the scotch. I also did a commondore this way about 2 years ago. |
