Ford Announces 1.0 Litre 3 cylinder Ecoboost Petrol Engine

A few brands are pushing the petrol engine into ever greener territory however, and Ford's EcoBoost engine range is one example of hybrid-like performance.

This week, Ford has announced its smallest production engine yet, and its first ever three-cylinder engine, in the form of the turbocharged 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine, developed at Ford of Europe's Dunton Technical Centre in the UK.

Although power and performance figures have not yet been revealed, Ford Global Product Development boss Derrick Kuzak promises numbers on par with "most normally-aspirated 1.6 litre petrol engines."

“Consumers are telling us they want to buy affordable vehicles that get many more miles per gallon,” Kuzak said.

“Our new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine will give consumers looking for hybrid-like fuel economy a new, more affordable choice.”

The tiny engine's coming was first announced in April last year, when it featured as the powertrain for Ford's futuristic Start concept.

Ford will release full the full details at September's Frankfurt Motor Show.

A local debut for the new engine has yet to be announced, but as competition increases in the growing sub-light segment, the tiny 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine could be in Ford Australia's future.

Thats pretty good, would be interesting if it can match the 88KW the Fiesta makes naturally aspirated from its 1.6L 4 cylinder engine.

No doubt this will be banned in some states for P platers.

I had a smart fortwo 1L turbo it made 65rwkw stock and was fast (no ********, faster 0-80 than my v8 soarer) but it was thirsty for a little bugger

Something different about driving a triple, not bad but I prefer a 4cyl

looks like a good idea. volkswagon has had success with its turbo/super charged 1.4L.
Lots of efficent power can be made from small engines, just ask my mid 80s motorcyle that is .75L and makes 64kw because it can rev to 10,000rpm. in a car it would suck a lot of fuel, but a modern ecoboost unit would not.

Ecoboost is a great platform, it will deliver high technology turbo engines to the masses without increasing costs because it will be so mass produced, im looking forward to it.

There are rumours around that this type of motor could form the basis of the new Formula Ford replacement engine. Formula Ford started with the Kent and then Zetec / duratec engine. If they stop production of the duratec then they'll be looking for a new one and a turbo diesel varient of the ecoboost has been mentioned.
