V8 capri in WA

Does anyone know if its possible to register a V8 capri in WA?

Whats involved?

HI BRAD

Mate i thought it was all good in all states ..you must have a certifacate of work done and the car must be stamped ... well i thought thats how its done in qld... but it all depends the amount of ccc the car had from day dot.. and i think iam not sure , but i think you can go up twice of the amount of ccc engine capastity....

Check your state traffic authority web site,some states are clamping down N.S.W. has a formula to work it out also must be engineered

Yeh, V8 in a Capri is getting harder in some states (although there are still people building them). In the ACT it's all but impossible.

Check your state transport authority website for any references to light vehicle modifications, and they will hopefully have what you need to know. It's almost certain that engineering certification will be necessary, so it could be useful to speak to an engineer first.

Off the top of my head, I'm guessing uprated brakes, suspension, and chassis strengthening would be needed.

Did a quick search and all the info u need is in the VSB (Vehicle Standards Bulletin) which u can find here

go down the page a bit and there is an engine section

now specifically for the question u asked, it all depends on wat capri u have and wat V8 u intend on running for example if u have one that had the optional V6 which weighs in at say 1200kg then u can run up to a 6L, however if u have a lighter model, say 1000kg u can only run up to a 4L. The table on how to work it out is in tha VSB, it wouldnt copy and paste properly in here

Kerb weight of a V6 capri is 1079kgs, so that works out at 4.3 litres (dare I suggest a Holden 253 small block

). Just kidding.

Presuming these are the regulations WA follows, you could consider a more modern V8 (Audi 4.2, BMW 3.5), and these would have the advantage of more easily passing emissions regs. There was a 262 cubic inch (4.3 litre) Ford V8, but they aren't so common. Chevy V6 was something I considered years ago, and they can put out good power. A mate put one into a Mazda RX4 and it was awesome.

P76 / Leyland / Rover 4.4lt....been done many times before. But I'm told they are expensive to rebuild, and as cossie says, may be much cheaper (in the long run) and more efficient modern options. Depends haw far you want to go with modding, and whether you want 'modern' mechanicals (efi etc) or that retro-style (carby, supercharger....) v8 upgrade.
And.......how about a Lexus V8 (it's not a Toyota...really, it's not...)

im building a v8 capri at the moment in qld though..
but to give you an indication all i have to do to get it plated is:
brake upgrade
suspension upgrade
and offcourse make sure the engine mounts are up to standard..
but mind you im using a 289 windsor in a v6 capri body..
i would assume wa would be pretty similar? as the perana's came out with 302's from factory so it wouldnt be an issue.

There are quite a few guys with V8 capri's in Perth,
It has been quite a few years since I had mine licensed and approved,back then you needed an engineers certificate and approval.

Unfortunately, the V8 Perana capris were built by Basil Green's Ford dealership in Sth Africa. As they weren't Australian they can't be relied upon for V8 engineering here, and although Ford Sth Africa allowed them to be made they aren't officially a Ford factory produced car.
