Default Vale Nancy "The White Mouse" Wake

Just read on the news that Nancy Wake passed away this morning.

If you don't know who she is, you really should go and find out. She has to be one of the bravest people who ever graced this planet and saved thousands of soldiers in WWII plus she is an Aussie. She was so good at what she did she topped the Getapo most wanted list and was a brilliant asset for the allies.

She was a true hero. RIP.

Quote:
UPDATE 8.57am: AUSTRALIA'S most decorated World War II servicewoman, Nancy Wake, has died. Wake, known as the White Mouse, died in a hospital in London, where she had lived since 2001. She was 98.
A close friend confirmed Ms Wake's death early today (Australian time).
The fearless WWII French resistance fighter and leader had lived in a London nursing home for retired veterans since suffering a heart attack in 2003. Her health recently deteriorated after being admitted to hospital with a chest infection.
After a typical fighting recovery late last week, her condition worsened over the weekend and she passed away peacefully on Sunday evening at the Kingston Hospital.
When France was occupied by the Nazis in 1940 she and her French husband Henri Fiocca became active in the resistance movement.

Ms Wake saved thousands of Allied lives by setting up escape routes and sabotaging German installations. Trained as a spy by the British, she led 7000 resistance fighters in D-Day preparations and was on top of the Gestapo's most wanted list.
Called the White Mouse by the Germans because of her ability to evade capture, Ms Wake learned at the end of the war that Fiocca was tortured and killed in 1943.
Ms Wake is regarded as a heroine in France which decorated her with its highest military honour, the Legion d'Honneur, as well as three Croix de Guerre and a French Resistance Medal.
She was also awarded Britain's George Medal and the US Medal of Freedom.
She was made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2004.

I have a documentary and book about Nancy, a very remarkable woman who rose to the challenge and survived....

They definitely broke the mould with Nancy and the world is a sadder place with her passing...

It's hard to comprehend the fire in her gut to do what she did, a world class hero that won't ever be replaced.

RIP Nancy Wake.

She had an unbreakable sense of purpose, not even the turture or death of her husband deterred her. the hero may be dead but the legend lives on....

Truly a loss of monolithic proportions to not only this country but the world . Was totally incensed to see that hypocrit Gillard having the temerity and audacity to speak on the passing of a true hero whom the labour party ridiculed , belittled and attempted to grind into the dirt because she came within 126 votes of defeating Doc Evatt .

As the leader of the country, I think most people would have been outraged if she had not acknowledged her passing.

Lets not bring politics into the thread,

Nancy is truely an inspirational person who took enormous risks during the war. We have so much to learn from people like Nancy. R.I.P

I totally agree.

Keep the political comment out of it, it is not warranted nor wanted.

Feel free to pay your respects to a truly remarkable Australian that although will be sorely missed is now having her well earned rest. She made her mark on the world and through her efforts, thousands had a better life, those actions deserve our utmost respect.

RIP White Mouse. Unfortunately it took Australia a long time to recognise your contribution to the war effort, many Allied airman owe their lives to you and your resistance group helping them escape enemy captivity.

They should show her story and that of Sister Vivian Bullwinkle and the Desert Rats to the new generations in school to understand the sacrifices made by many for the freedom we have today and maybe instill some national pride.

Unfortunately, it probably doesn't fit in with politics of today.

National heros such as you have mentioned should always fit the politics of today, our politics of today exist because they fought for it.
