Whole pedal box would need to be changed, otherwise you'll have no gap between the oversized brake (auto) to the smaller brake (manual.)

not only can you use nothing but an AU ECU you can't swap between series 1 and series 2 / 3.
a j3 chip is a device that plugs into the bottom of the ECU to change it's settings your best option is to watch ebay for a cheap ECU they normally go fairly cheap

The resistor just stops the fans running full blast non stop. I ran the auto pcm in mine for a few weeks and it stalled maybe 6 times when slowing down.

The resistor trick is the practice of putting a 1/4 watt, 1.5 Kohm resistor across the two wires out of the ECU which run to the selector switch. This tells the ECU that the gearbox is in Neutral. It's not for the fans, it's for the idle control primarily. Without it, the engine will idle at 1500 RPM unless you unplug the idle solenoid, which often means it won't idle cold at all.
From memory, and it's been a while, I'm sure the Smartshield wasn't introduced until serII AUs. I know for a fact the serI computers are compatible with EFs, I have one in mine as we speak.

Mine didnt idle high, it was just irratic and low.
Running an auto PCM in a manual car will put the fans on all the time. The PCM doesnt see the gearbox anymore so it hits the fans as a safe gaurd for overheating the tranny oil. The way i see jobs like this is do it once, do it right or dont do it.

a friend of mine converted his vt commonwhore to manual and said he paid an auto elec to do some sort of wiring stuff to the ecu and it performs likes a proper manual, cost only $120, would that be the same thing? |

Yeah, it performs like a manual. Basically it tells the computer the gearbox is in neutral, so it disregards the control sets for the auto. Nothing wrong with doing it that way, I've had the same auto computer in two different cars over the last ten years set up like that and it's been fine. Most likely your mate paid the sparky to do just that. I specialise more in Fords than Holdens, but can't see it'd be any different.
