Exclamation Transport and Main Roads data shows six new fixed speed cameras deliver record return

Transport and Main Roads data shows six new fixed speed cameras deliver record return of $350,274 in speeding fines every day

by: Robyn Ironside From: The Courier-Mail March 17, 2012 12:00AM

THE rollout of six new fixed cameras helped deliver a record return for the State Government, with $350,274 worth of speeding fines issued every day last year.

Data provided by Transport and Main Roads shows motorists racked up 671,559 speeding offences on Queensland roads, worth $127.8 million, compared with 604,069 tickets worth $112.6 million in 2010.

The increase was largely due to a 76 per cent jump in fines issued by fixed cameras, now in 15 southeast locations.

More will be rolled out this year when the Brisbane Airport Link tunnel opens.

Mobile camera vans, which include covert cameras, also snapped more speedsters - up from 292,208 to 320,313.

The huge number of fines coincided with the second- lowest Queensland road toll since records began in 1952.

All categories of speeding offences climbed and 2989 people automatically lost their licences for six months after they were snapped at 40km/h or more over the speed limit.

Revenue goes to administration, road safety and helping victims of road trauma. My comment..no..general revenue...and if "every K over is a Killer". as the government claims, why isn't the road toll astronomical????????

Looks like the way the government coffers get rich of the cameras, that they will never bring in gps controlled vehicles that sit at a predetermined speed and aren't driven by us. So in a way it is still good for us as we will be able to have the odd blat, without being totally controlled.

That may be true but there are exceptions like driving through the Clem 7 tunnel with speed boards at 80 kph
and speed camera thinking it's 40 kph. Ridiculously low speed limits set for kilometers before road works because
road gangs too lazy to move signs. And no, I haven't been caught at either...

I see it as a tax, therefore I avoid giving away my hard earned cash to the government.

Thats a lot going over the limit by that much. Put up 10,000 cameras to catch those doing 40 plus ..... there is a case to answer if you are caught. Its the 3k;s over that is criminal. QLD is becoming very Victorian ..... must be to do with how many of us live up there!

They don't do Christmas parties anymore. (Embarrassing photo's can show up in the press)

All funds are now directed towards overseas fact finding and educational holidays trips.

Again Fudged figures
they failed to mention that these new cameras also have a much lower tolerance. I have seen a camera fine from the Nudgee camera for 94 in a 90 zone, So you have all those drivers, who previously went though 5kph over the limit and not pinged, now included in those figures, chances are the number of people exceeding the limit by 10kph + has dropped as the number of people doing less than 10kph over the limit would be much higher.
But it gives them the figures they need to fool the public to introduce more cameras

previously the fixed cameras with 10% in 100+ zones and 10kph for zones below 100, This changed when they introduced the new rules that allow for the cameras to work in the dynamic speed sign zones

Now as for those dynamic speed signs, many times late at night on the gateway the speed will be dropped to 40kph from Mt Gravatt-Capalaba rd all the way to the bridge and NO roadworks or any other hazards on the road at all. And no one takes notice of them then they wonder why no one slows down for roadworks.

The roadworks procedure for traffic control is also different between the local and State road Authorities and some of the time they are not followed thus you never have a standard speed reduction process for work sites

They say it coincides with a record low road toll. Cars are getting safer so is that thanks to cameras? Data has shown in Vic that accidents have been going up...but deaths are going down. Is this because of lower speeds or safer cars?

Neither
the road toll QLD wide drops but there are only 6 new cameras and mostly here in SEQ

Don't forget road toll figures also include pedestrian and bicycle riders

Most crashes are not directly caused by excessive speed but speed was a contributing factor, but the speed may not have been in excess of the posted limit, just too fast for the conditions

It's all spin and hog wash to try and justify the use of the cameras.

Incorrect... Traffic control and road works signage ALL fall under the MUTC in QLD.
The problem is people DONT KNOW the rules.
A lot of traffic control companies are NOT setting things out correctly.
How many times does it need to be said on here i dont know??... but if the sigmage is wrong in a road works area... and you are fined for speeding then dont pay the fine and go to court. Take photos of the incorrect signs.

In Townsville as an example I have come across no less then 30 road works area which have incorrect signage within a 4 week period when all the repairs started from the damage cause by last years heavy rain.

The council simply shrugged its shoulders....

I spoke to main roads and they said there isnt much they can do because council should be getting up the contractors, but they dont.

When you drive through a main roads controlled area youll notice that everything is "usually" set out correctly etc... unlike contractors.

Maybe QLD Motorways that have their own regs
I know there are two sets of regs, My BIL was working on the Gateway and the Pacific Freeway and they had to follow different regs on the gateway, where signs were started 2klms away and were at 40kph 1 klm before the actual works
on the Pacific it was about 1/2 those distances

Again people see no works for a klm and just don't slow down so it's pointless setting them out that far

Just a note, when crash investigation says "speed is a factor", they mean that velocity is a factor, not the driver error of speeding.

It wont matter who owns the road ... council or state... all under the same set of guidelines.

There will obviously be different distances for roadwork signs required on a multilane freeway and a suburban road. Sometimes a freeway is also limited to actual space where a sign can be placed etc....
If the minimun distances cant be met on a freeway they will tend to space them out further.... much to everyones annoyance obviously if they drive at 40kmh a few km before they see any works being carried out.

Sometimes it also lazyiness from the traffic controllers, as the workers move up the road and the signs are left in their orginal start position....

That is a terrible circumstance. An extreme example. But, it is true. The government will peddle whatever THEY want. Governments are addicted to easy revenue wherever they can get it.

I must be very fortunate. I have been booked once in the last 40 years, at 2am on the Pacific Highway, Far North coast NSW "black spot" 100k down to 80k on a hard curve. All the rest of the time I set cruise to 4k over allowing for smoky tolerance and speedo error. I don't have to winge about revenooers or unfair practices. Just sit on or about the speed limit and get where I want to be without losing chunks of my income. Same in built up areas. Sit on or close to speed limit, no cash loss. Or points!
