Spirits having flown
PORT WAKEFIELD: Sightings of the Port Wakefield ghost have been reported at various times since the 1940s on Highway 1 between Port Wakefield and Adelaide. The spirit is said to be an airforce pilot killed in a plane crash during a training flight out of Malalla during World WarII. He still appears to drivers along this stretch of road in an air force uniform.

I don't believe in ghosts or anything of the supernatural or spiritual sort, so I'd be very interested to see this for myself.

he was standing off to the left......windy, drizzly night.....hard to see him but he stepped out almost onto the road verge......I seen him clear as bell I pulled up about 20 yards in front of him, opened the door for him to get in but he was gone I got out of the truck to have a look for him, thinking I may have clipped him with the trailer but there was nothing there I have to say it makes the heckles on my neck rise now just remembering it and that was a long time ago it has stuck with me though and I can still see him standing there...I reckon I could show you the exact spot he stepped from more things on heaven and earth than can be explained by mere mortals

yep! heard it all before......but I know what I seen....drop into the first fuel station on the left heading into wakefield late at night and talk to a few heavy drivers
you'll quickly find that I'm not the only one that's seen him also ask about the "light's" on the hill north of wakefield!........then there's the light's just outside Orroroo.....nullabor plain is another hotspot more here than just us! I used to be cynical!

My wife had an experience with this fellow.
It was about 14 years ago and she was very pregnant with our eldest child. At the time we were living on the yorke peninsula and made frequent trips to Adelaide, often late at night after work. This particular weekend i had headed off early on the friday morning to get some things sorted out during business hours. My wife was to follow later that evening after work. It was early winter at the time and the day itself was cold and windy with light drizzle, by the time she left Maitland at 7:30 it was dark and unpleasant to drive in. She said it drizzled throughout the journey until she reached Dublin where it began to get heavier. She had slowed down a bit when all of a sudden she saw a set of legs directly infront of her. she said she jumped on the brakes and shut her eyes expecting to feel the thump as she hit whoever it was but instead she simply came to a stop. A car following her stopped and after a bit of a hunt around in the dark and wet they followed her to Adelaide. She told me afterwards that she thought it was a skydiver from the nearby skydiving school as the person she saw was wearing a jumpsuit type outfit. Years after i was told about the Pilot who frequented the highway and believe this is who she saw. |

However the 'Pilliga Princess' was real and could now be haunting there as she died a few years ago.

It looks like a few of us are doing a Pt Wakefield run tonight (just for the hell of it). Will keep my eyes peeled on the return journey to Adelaide.
Will be interesting.

I don't believe in ghosts at all but I'm very intrigued by this story. I make regular runs back an fourth on Pt Wakefield road so next few trips I'm gunna made sure they're midnight runs & keep my eye out. Tempted to mount a video camera on the dash just for the sake of it.

The pilliga princess did indeed exist. Her name was Claire Wibson, she was killed in 1993 when she was struck by a stock truck (Stockmaster from Tamworth if I remember correctly) on the Newell north of Coonabarabran. She is buried in Coona cemetery and her headstone credits her as "The Pilliga Princess". I think she was in her fifties when she died.
Although she never travelled further north than Narrabri rumour has it that she often got lifts with IPEC drivers to visit family near West Wyalong in her younger days. I once asked her where she came from and she said Gunnedah which I also heard from others. And before you say anything Roger I engaged in no "personal servicing"!! Young lad though I was in those days Last edited by Fantome; 21-05-2012 at 02:18 PM. |

While we are on a ghost thread have any of the Barrier Highway runners spotted "The Ghost of Dolo Creek" about 60 kms west of Wilcannia? Reputed to be the ghost of a drunk station worker swept away by flood waters while trying to rescue sheep in the 1890's.
Thought I saw him one night but on the next trip figured out that what I actually saw was the plinth for the commemorative plaque for the bridge! Yep, linehaul will do that to you! Last edited by Fantome; 21-05-2012 at 02:09 PM. Reason: stupid keyboard! |
