this is south australia only but there is a fair chance the same practices happen across the whole country. this is not a cop bashing, camera bashing thread, so keep those opinions to yourself. personally i think it should become mandatory to supply the photo with the expiation notice. it should also be free (if it isn't already). this isn't about getting out of a fine on a technicality. this is about if the photo proves that the wrong person has received the fine. |

I agree entirely. Given the technology they have, attaching a photo shouldn't be a big ask....

Always wondered what would happen if an interstate plate that coincided with a local plate got snapped by a camera. Would the camera system/operator assume its the locally registered car that committed the offence?

I thought they did supply a photo?
The last time Dad got a speeding fine, a good 4 years ago, there was a small photo of the BAII. Everyone else we know who's mentioned getting one more recently mentioned the photo as well. Just WA maybe? |

most states now have new plates though so should also eliminate this sort of thing in the future when they are more common. |

Yes in WA you get a pic to keep. The downside for some people was when their partner opened the mail and wanted to know who the blonde in the passenger seat was.

Last two times i was snapped (nearly 10yrs ago) I was given an actual photo on photograph paper!... 2nd time round a few yrs later it was a photo printed on the fine itself (QLD).
No idea what happens nowadays... but if people dont get a photo and simply pay the fine how stupid are they?

There's a photo on the fine in qld. I know i wouldn't be paying the fine if they(dot, rta) just sent a letter stating i was speeding with out atleast a pic of my car.

You can go to https://viewinfringement.police.wa.gov.au/ and you get a high quality pic you can save. Or have a closer look at how stupid you are.

My son borrowed my car about 12 years ago in QLD, got the flash and did not tell me. When the fine arrived in the mail, he tried to deny it. Showed him the excellent quality photo with him sitting up nicely behind the steering wheel with his girlfriend beside him, only 15k over. He shut up and paid up. expensive lesson for a 20 year old. I did not think that identical plates were issued anywhere in Australia. This forum is the first place I have heard of it. Interstate Registry authorities are supposed to ensure that this does not happen. I know that it is done with truck registrations and truck driver licences as I had a HR Federal Interstate licence until a few years ago.

I got one a couple of years back 10 k over
and got a 6X8 photo so I couldnt deny it just paid up regarding similar/same numbers from different states here in QLD you can have your normal number plates turned around that is have the letters first instead of numbers first and they are just called personal plates but that can upset the system the same as the number one and the letter I in personal plates |

Also, almost all photos here in Vic are from the rear, so no telling who is in the car driving at the time

In Tasmania you have to go into the Police station in Hobart to view the image. All plates are checked manually by clerical staff, who use various image filters to read the plates of the car in the image and yes mistakes do happen.
I used to be responsible for looking after the software that they used and some of the cameras. I got a fine one day for my bike while I was doing that job and guess what - they had misread the license plate. It does happen as humans aren't infallible. Best advice is to always ask to see the photo if you have any doubts it was you. You may be right. |

Well i know from experience here in Bendigo, Victoria, There is no photo supplied with the fine, to view the photo you must go to Melbourne to a head office, and the will show you the photo on a computer screen, and then you can pay to have it printed off, or alternatively you can pay and have the photo mailed to you.
This was only a few months ago also. Although its a shame because i cant really remember what the cost of it is. |

that to me is wrong. they are trying to prove you are guilty, so supplying a photo should be mandatory and free.
