Hey.
I got a USB Internet dongle through Internode because I can't get ADSL out here on the farm. I first asked them for a mini wifi modem running 3G but they sent me a dongle, which isn't a huge deal just sucks when I want the net on my tablet or something. I have a Telstra wifi modem with a USB port on the side of it, is there anyway I can plug it into that to turn it into a wifi hotspot using the USB dongle I have or something? Anyway I can do this without having to sending it back to them? |

No, that won't work.
You can get 3G modems with wifi from places like office works.

Depends on your tablet or phone , I can do it with my HTC onexl no worries and pc with wireless compatability, but having multiple residences is the reason I don't have a wireless modem ...your best and cheapest option...which I also have at one house , works well ,get external Arial for best results

You can buy 3G routers that will do what you want or you could try using an ISP who will provide the right equipment for the job. thats the problem with budget ISPs they may be cheap but you get what you pay for in both equipment and quality of service

Internode is the only mob who will supply me anything out here. I've called Optus and said look I have a pre-paid wifi modem with use and I get full service and it does what I need and I want a Modem on a plan, all I get is "Sir I'm sorry we do not offer any coverage in that area" even though I state we get full service with our phones and the wifi modem.
So I found out Internode were the same as Optus or what ever, so went with them. |

As before , check wireless and networks on your laptop, it may have the ability ...mine do as does my phones ...no you can't make them have it if its not build in .If wanting to run multiple devices a wireless 3g modem is your next best option , I run all my laptops and home computers through my phone with a good data plan ...dongles are the past ...but if your on a contract with no service you can opt out , my HTC with 4 g makes it pleasant browsing...and most cost effective

I got no problems with speed, Internode are descent as I generally don't have to wait, can watch HD videos on tube ect. Just the dongle is a *** and don't want to wait if I send it back then wait another 2 weeks for a wifi modem, will have to go into office works or something. |

Go back to Internode and get yourself a mifi.
It's a little device where you plug in the sim for your internet and it's a portable hotspot. Looks like they don't sell the mifi anymore, but they do sell this:https://secure.internode.on.net/webtools/store?add=96

you already have everything you need. With say windows XP just enable internet connection sharing in your network properties... Look for something to tick that says "enable others to connect using this connection" generally also means that your laptop has to be hard coded with a static IP of "192.168.0.1" from my fading memory. |
