Default DVD recorder?

Hi all

I want to burn DVDs from my Sony HD video camera. When I go through iMovie and Toast Titanium the quality isn't as good as direct from the camera. So, I'm thinking of a DVD recorder but only if they are HD quality ie up to the camera and with a HD tuner.

Can anyone recommend a HD DVD recorder please?

Cheers
Geoff

Sounds like you need a Blu-ray recorder if you want HD (720p and higher) quality. DVDs are an outgoing technology from the old millennium and are only standard definition.

I know Panasonic sell BD recorders

I've got a Panasonic HD DVD Recorder and its the best thing I ever bought. It replaced my previous Panasonic DVD recorder, but only because it couldn't record HD channels so I was limited to ch7, 9, 10 etc.

Mine's not a Blue-ray version, its an older version pre-blue ray. Mine was $8-900 dollars from JB Hi-fi when I bought it but you can get them for probably $300 now.

Shop around, there are a couple of different versions of the Panasonic Blue ray recorders.

What video format are you running in iMovie?

If you have the correct format there should be no loss in video quality afaik. Why are you using Toast?

I've got iMovie9. I've made DVDs with it before but it kept asking me to reduce the resolution so this time I used Toast. Might try iMovie again.

Format? Bit of a dumb *** I'm afraid with this stuff

I'm not much better than a dumb *** either, I'm afraid. Are you close to an Apple store. They have free classes on using this stuff and their guys are pretty helpful. If you made an appointment at their Genius bar (I hate that name) they can probably walk you through the configuration.

Check your import settings on iMovie. Default is 960x540 for importing HD (which is still much better than DVD). Switch it to 1080x1920. It will transcode to Apple Intermediate Codec, which I think is pretty good (but file size is big). You can always try Final Cut Pro X. It will keep the files native with the AVCHD recording on the camera (file size is compact, quality is high).

Thanks all. I bought a Panasonic DVD HD burner today. Hardly Normal wanted $499 and dropped it to $409 and JB HiFi wanted 410 and dropped it to $335! awesome. Managed to cut out three separate remote controls and all looks sweet so far.

Thanks for the Genius bar heads up too.

Cheers and thanks again.

obviously the lack of rca's don't help
have they deliberately made it difficult to record?

You can hook a recorder to the scart without problem. If that's what you want to do. But the IQ is a recorder so it's a redundant function unless you're looking to archive recordings.
