yeah i know what you mean , i know i'm becoming grumpy as i enter my mid 40's , please excuse any big dick talk that i come out with , but i have done the 80 hour plus weeks , the 2 jobs , etc . and there is a time and a place to enjoy all that , its part of being young and is almost necessary for ambitious people , however when life goes on , and you see people getting addicted to work , divorced , debted to the hilt , or rich and driving a hyundi excell whilst living in a 2 bdroom sh i tter with 4 to 5 mill of equity in properties , people dying young , or losing it all in divorce settlements , or people retireing and not knowing what to do ,
IT , REALLY DOES BECOME OLD HAT , AND YOU START TO REALIZE what the old dudes grumppy attitude and rediculed comments came from when you werer an apprentice all those years ,
It's quite conflicting really , when your young its all ahead of you , when your over half way a lot of it is behind you .
one thing you do realise is often your ambitions can and will be acheived , but you will get there and never do em .or never get there at all .
i think what ever floats your boat , do it , but always keep looking at yourself along the way . and dont be taken advantage of or exploited by yourself or anyone else .

this economy has certainly turned into a crazy world. i agree, its difficult to put a number on hours i work. from the minute i get up at 0430 i start sending emails, when i get home im working on what ever piece of paperwork is needed at the moment as i cant afford admin support or what IT problem needs to be resolved in my database as i cant afford IT support, etc.

i saw a tv show a year and a half ago. i saw a movie 5 years ago.

i come here and listen to music when i need a break or while i'm working. otherwise its just all work.

right now im taking a break from this stupid business plan i've been working on for the past week and must submit to the landlord of my shop by monday. never in my life have i hear of writting a business plan in a week and a half....bunch of expletives occur here.

its very hard to calculate that.

I am paid 42 hours, I am at work for about 36 and probably only work 20-30 depending on the shifts for that week.

I work in hospitality at the Stamford grand and also as a chef at Hogs Breath Cafe for a bit of extra cash. For a while I would do 9am start at hogs breath till roughly 4 or 5, then start at the grand at 5 or 6 and work until 3. I can tell you that unless you are addicted to methamphetamines you will struggle to do that sort of work for longer than a month or two. I did it for about 1.5. I have since trimmed my hours down to 8 a week at hogs and between 40-50 at the grand. Much more manageable. I have been power saving for a while as I want to buy a new car with cash and working as much as I can is the best way to achieve this. It was worth it, in the short term, to pump lots of hours and not see any of my friends or family, but in the end if you become addicted to working non stop because you think you have something to prove by working 15 hours a day 7 days a week then maybe you need to rethink what life is all about. Work is a necessity but so is relaxation and being lazy! Oh and my record was 112 hours in one week. Hard but I made it through and with a 2.8k pay pack to my name.

Me too, but if you average it out it's really 42hr pw.(8 day cycle)
Mine is 42.8 because we get .2hr shower time as its illegal to leave site without one(it's a lead smelter)
Its a good arrangement... long weekend every weekend(even if its the middle of the week!)

I work 40 hours a week, specialist IT technician for Dept. of Education, super fancy title :P
It's a great job though and I enjoy it thoroughly, good pay for my age as well.

Impressive work mate. You'd have to be a machine to pump out anywhere near those sorts of hours on a weekly basis. Tax man would love you. haha. But yeah if you have your mind set on something then the hours can be worth it for a short time. Do you know if Nando still works at the Stamford?

mon- fri 8-5 40hrs as a surveyor. I was in london a few years back and the South African guy i lived with worked day and night shift from monday to saturday night for years. He left home at 6am for his day job doing maintenance on rail maintenance equipment, got home about 530, ate dinner went to bed got up at 1030pm then went to work nights on the rail tracks themselves doing rail welding, and other maintenance work. got home around 4am then got back up at 6 and did the same thing all over. Not huge hours as such maybe 70-80/wk but he lived on about 4 or 5 hours sleep a day. I guess there is plenty of motivation when if he was back home in SA his monthly wage wouldn't amount to a weeks work in London. I think he did this for 5 years or more before he went back home.

For me its 2x 6 day weeks and one 5 day week on minimum 10hrs a day with 3 and 4 days off.

I'm 31 and work as a Security Guard. Work long hours on a rotating roster and it's possible to earn $60,000 if you want. I did this but have now dropped down to a day only site. I earn less than $40,000 a year and have zero stress and zero responsibility. I now see my wife every day and I have normal sleeping patterns!

I owe nothing to anyone. I firmly believe stress kills. I saw my uncle go through this with his work and it's not worth it.

I won't go into a rant, as everyone has the right to chose what they do. I chose to live a relaxing complete stress free existence. I work with a great group of people.

The only stress I have is if it's going to rain on the weekend I want to wash my car. No mortgage, no car loans, no credit cards.

Great for yo Mr BA. I concur. Stress kills. The key here is learning to manage it, and being realistic with your goals without sacrificing your own mental health or family commitments. Learning to say no, and not feeling bad for doing so is the biggest test for most especially when the $ carrot is dangled before them.

For some there is no choice, its work hard long hours or starve. Some have family to feed, on one wage and still struggle in low income housing. It just means we cant paint everybody with the same brush.

living within ones means and being content is something we all have to contend with and apply. Ignoring this leads to sadness.

It's all about staying within your needs, and not trying to keep up with others, and not buying things I don't need.

A minimum of 84 hours per week expected of me(base salary) and any time over that as overtime. Position is a Marine Engineer, and I definitely work every single 1 of those hours. But I'm doing my dream job(F1 driver never happened). 42 days straight, then 42 days at home. So if I average it out over a year a minimum of 42 hours per week. A hard but extremely rewarding job.

I speak to Barristers quite a lot. I really don't know the ins and outs of the legal profession, but I do know they probably have one of the highest pressure jobs you could dream off - i work in the court system.

I over hear them talking. Yesterday one was discussing the in ground pool getting installed, while the other was talking about his watch fetish. Sure, I'd love a large house in an affluent suburb with a pool and 3 cars, but the poor buggers never get time to enjoy it! They wrap up one case, then pretty much straight after they are reading the depositions on another case.

The good ones do go to Europe every year though..... For 6 weeks.
