Question Cleaning headlights

I have a used AU Fairlane headlight, the chrome benzel has some water staining along the bottom edge.
My question is if i remove the lens can the chrome be cleaned?
I've been told the chrome is very thin, has anyone tried cleaning it or should i leave it as it is?

You will most likely take the chrome off if you try to clean it.
It is very thin and if it's already damaged by water it will be even weaker.

I pulled one apart and tried to clean the years of water residue off of it and as long as you're real gentle and don't try to use anything more than clean water and a soft cloth you should get away with it but if you so much as give it a firm rub or use Windex or some such thing then the chrome layer will rub off, it really is super thin. You'll find that the glass lenses will probably need a damn good clean as well. Getting them out without breaking the tabs off can be a bit tricky but take your time and you should be right.
