Hey all!
I was wondering if there's anyone here in the construction, mining or military industry that could help me out with some research. Im really interested in some heavy machinery and would love to go on a tour or museum to take some photos and see these beasts first hand. Ive been gathering so many photos online, but it just isnt the same. Preferably Melbourne based since im in melbourne haha. Thanks!! |

bit hard to find heavy machinery in Melbourne.......outback SA, WA, QLD is where you have to be.....most open cut mines do tours
you have to travel, home deliveries of Cat 770's, 790's and D11's are rare

They do tours on site here in Tom Price, WA…..But You don’t get up close to the machinery.
You stay in a bus the whole time (Safety Reasons)…And it depends what is in being serviced. You don’t actually go near where the trucks are operating. Unless they are driving them to/from a service. Either way, if you’ve never seen these machines in the flesh…it’s pretty cool! I’m around the bloody things all day, they are just big and loud haha. I wouldn’t be shelling out the coin to come to remote WA JUST to go on a mine tour though….

Get yourself down to the Latrobe valley and Gippsland, plenty of active coal mining going on there and a good history of mining. And only a few hours drive away

I think you have to do it by arrangement, its not a one runs every 2 hours type proposition.

However, Powerworks ceased operations as of the end of last year. I understand that there are efforts in the background to try and get it reopen. In the meantime, the only way you could get a tour is to have it organised through a large group or know someone who works there. If the OP wants a tour of Loy Yang A (power station and/or mine) PM me and I will see what I can arrange, although I cannot promise anything. Craig H

One option is the Mining Expos. I only know about the ones in WA, but I imagine they happen in other states from time to time. You won't see the REALLY big stuff, but you can get up close to some of the more interesting stuff.
Other option is to apply for a job you're well qualified for, and ask for a site visit & tour.
