Is it possible? I want to buy a car from a dealer as a surprise for someone. Can I sign a contract of sale and have the car transferred into someone elses name? I don't want to transfer it into my name and pay stamp duty then pay again to transfer it again.

you can buy a car when going to register vehicle tell them you want it in other persons name be aware you are liable for repayments (if under finance) they also need to be there when you do transfer as their details need to be put on paperwork

yes, assuming you are paying cash, just tell the dealer. The contract will be in your name, but the vehicle can be registered in theirs.
(the legal processess can be a bit tricky, but providing you're on good terms with the dealer, they should be happy to help.)

in queensland.
the contract can be in your name ,but the person name the rego is going in needs to sign the form and a copy of there licence . if it is a surprise you may be able to sort something out with the car yard so it temporarily is still in its name till the forms are signed.

Thanks. Looks like I'll need to chat with a dealer and hope they'll be flexible. Now to find a car.

In Vic, the exemption for stamp duty on transfers only applies between spouses or domestic partners, or ex's thereof, not even your kids are included!!!
