Gday all.
I blew the headgasket on my EA on the weekend, water got into the oil which cause the car to throw a leg out of bed. So basically I have decided to get a newer car in the falcon or fairmont series. Now I have $10k to play with, and I'm thinking an AU falcon or EL/EF fairmont. Manual transmission will be preffered. I pretty much have my heart set on either of the above models, so basically my question is: What sort of things should I look out for when looking at these cars? Apart from the obvious like unusual noises, head gaskets and that sort of thing, how well she drives etc. Anyway any input will be appreciated muchly!... Cheers Ashley |

Your best bet would probably be an EL XR6. You should be able to find a decent one with a manual etc for around 10k, just get it inspected by someone before you buy and make sure it comes with a road worthy etc.
Um, if you get a fairmont it will be an automatic unfortunatly. So if you have your heart set on a manual, the EL xr would be your best bet, but you'll miss out on the "luxury" of the fairmont.

Could you post some pix up for me please if possible? And regarding a Fairmont, you could always undertake a manual conversion if you're game, or have the $$$ (for a mechanic to do it), or have a friend(s) who can help. -Dave- |

The car is at the towing yard still and unfortunately I haven't got access to a digital camera.
It was a mess though. Oil and white smoke and coolant everywhere. Probably lucky the falcon is an auto, if it was a manual it could have been disastrous! Um, I would probably rather the fairmont in an auto with the extra luxury, and be able to do a manual conversion later on. Sounds good, any more advice and feedback will be appreciated. When I do buy a car I will definately get a digital camera from work maybe and take a photo. Cheers Ashley |

I'd probably be going the other way mate, get a Futura or XR with factory manual.
That way you can put the extra goodies like climate/trip/leather in later on - its a little easier than changing from auto transmission to manual, and manual is soooo much better.

I vote EL Fairmont. A touch older, but look very classy when cleaned up, the majority haven't been molested, are low k's, and as i see it, it shouldn't have many (if any) problems as it's the last of the series. Any AU you look at getting for 10k will either be base spec or getting high in the k's (Seen some AU1 fairmonts with about 180,000 on them for roughly 10k).

I love the look of the EL fairmonts.
Has a touch of class having a little luxury too. And you don't see too many of them done up. Anyway, now I know what I'm looking for I'm off car hunting today! Keep yas posted! Cheers Ash |

Rightio, I checked out and test drove 10+ cars today.
Then I saw the one. It's an EF XR6, auto. Low k's, and I managed to talk to owner down by $500. It has a very nice interior, and the paint is in very decent condition. Has obviously been looked after. Has a full serivice history right up until the most recent service. One previous owner. I saw this car and I fell in love with it. Goes like a shower of ИИИИ and pulls up alot quicker than what I expected too. After getting the RACQ to inspect it I put down a deposit! Lovely car, treat to drive. Will try to get pics next week once all the paperwork is done! Cheers Ashley |
