When buying a second hand car (either privately or from a dealer) is it acceptable/possible to take the car away that same day the deal is done?
In other words, if I show up to the seller with the cash (and applicable transfer papers ready to sign) can I drive the car away there and then? Sorry if silly question, just been ages since I've bought a used car (also been watching too many of those stupid US car shows on Discovery Channel where they buy a car and take it away without any paperwork being done). Cheers.

I can't see why not, i'd just make sure to still do the appropriate REVS check to make sure you know what you're buying.

I've sold cars like this (unregoed), guy brings cash, you give him the car.
The only difference is that you would need to fill in transfer papers. A dealer my be different as they might have pre-delivery things that need doing (not sure as I've never bought a car from a dealer). I prefer to inspect the car, put a deposit down if I want it (they are then obligated to hold it for you) and collect at a later time, this gives me time to think about it and if I change my mind I only lose the deposit (however I've never changed my mind) Hope this is useful.

Do it all the time both private and from dealer. E.g. Bought a new jeep the other day from dealer. Filled out papers and drove away within 30mins of getting there. Bought a used falcon private a couple of months back and the same.

Sort out insurance as well. Get the quote emailed to you then pay for it on your phone prior to driving off. Budget Direct told me the highest risk for an accident was driving home a new car. That's what they told me when I questioned why I needed to take my new car for a visual inspection prior to them giving me full insurance.
