The writing is so godawful it's difficult to glean any useful information from the review.

I hate Jalopnik, but sadly it's the best car blog I know of. They don't even know how to spell "grille."

Is it me or Americans on average seem to have quite immature styling taste? Most reviews and comments I've read from that part of the world seem to get hung up on the fact that it doesn't have more vents, stripes & tack-on bits to make it "look" fast. Maybe it's just 15 year olds commenting on blogs, who knows.

^^Coming from someone who owns a model that its performance version is known for loud colours, stripes and an intake sticking out of the bonnet?

The only thing I dont like about American styling is the chrome rims, its on everything from a Mustang to a Viper..WTF.

I didn't make a comment about Australian tastes. Just that Americans seem almost universally unhappy with the mature styling of the VF. If you do want to make that argument though, Australians by contrast have not raised an issue about the lack of crap attached to the new Commodores and HSVs. In fact, the previous model HSV was universally panned for its stupid styling, to the point where HSV listened and toned down the Gen Fs significantly. Maybe Holden should have sent the Americans some E3 HSVs with chrome wheels.

Should be selling rebadged HSVs there then .. lots of tacked on scoops, spoilers, vents, DLRs, LEDs, etc, etc ..

I know exactly what he means by "noise restrictions". When we were in Nevada driving a rented top of the line Chev Impala LTZ...as front wheel drive V6...I was constantly amazed by the throaty throb of the engine when you floored it or even just gave it a good dose of throttle away from the lights...growling intake noise, a nice exhaust note...and this was a standard factory family car. It sounded really good, not mouse-fart-quiet like the occasional rented Commodores I have driven here at work or the G6E we recently owned.

They do love their striping...we saw many Chargers with racing stripes over the top and down the sides, even base models, and things like Challengers, Camaros, and Mustangs seemed to thrive on who could put then most stripes on them.

No need for apologies, I just find it odd that we bag HSV but they comfortably outsell FPV/Tickford even when they had a lesser engine. FPV dropped that $40M on an engine which made no appreciable difference to their viability (actually made it worse to some extent) and HSV crate engines and spend what cash they have on stuff people notice.

One did better than the other, and its hard to knock them when they have stood longer (for whatever reason).

Nobody is knocking the brand, just their E2/3 "vents for all" styling phase. They had the superior package and that's why they sold more, people started looking beyond the motor a long time ago.

Not that they really did this on the VF but one of my pet peeves with American styling is they seem to love front and rear bumpers that stick right out.

From Hyundai to BMW they all had these horrible bumpers on my last trip over there.
I just don't understand it, but hey it's what they like.

It's not a matter of liking. Their bumpers have to absorb a 5mph incident with no damage to the body of the car.

Well Holden do have a much bigger supporter base so would obviously sell more.
