Hi guys, ATM my son and I take turns at placing our cars in the garage, him with his AU III xr6 ST & my GTE,
This means generally one of our cars stays partially undercover under a pergola for about 2 weeks at a time not moving, I've brought a car cover to protect the remaining uncovered part from the elements but I'd like to know if over time if possible moisture build up after rains for example will damage the paint, Are car covers any good or am I better off leaving them in the elements so to speak?

Use the cover, it will be fine. I covered my XR6 every night after I'd finished respraying it, never worried about condensation or whatever.

I guess it would depend on where you live and what type of car cover it is. I live in Melbourne where it is cold and damp and I've never had issues with moisture buildup with my car cover, but mine is 100% totally waterproof. Not all car covers are.

I only have a carport and next door have a jacaranda so I thought I would try a car cover on my EL XR6 when I had it. It put marks in the paint when it "flapped" in the wind. Dust between the cover and the paint will also cause fine marks in the clear coat as it moves. Guess it depends on whether swirls in the clear coat bother you...
Premium natural waxes tend to focus on appearance but offer no long term protection -- i.e. you will need to apply every couple of months so use synthetic paint protection such as Meguires NXT GEN and leave the cover off...

Car covers are fine. I had a Stormcover custom made. Best cover I've ever owned. Guaranteed to protect up to golf ball size hail too. I leave it in the boot during storm season and its come in handy many times now.

Again, depends on whether you are ok with marks and swirls in the clear coat. Dust caught between the cover and the paint work WILL cause fine scratches in the clear coat. Especially outside where wind can cause movement.
If you are ok with this then use a cover. If you hate swirls in your paintwork then use another solution...

Tbh I do hate swirls however given that both cars are driven regularly they are also prone to stone chips etc so I've learnt to live with swirls. . .
And yep I'm in melbourne too so it looks like the car cover wins !
