I have a 50" Panasonic HD Vierra plasma, Pioneer HD set top box plus the good component leads $6500 or there abouts. It compliments the Yamaha & JBL component home theatre system nicely. The only problem is theres not enough motor sport televised !!!!!

I have a freind that works for Radio Rentals, She has advised against getting a plasma or lcd tv. Her reasons were they are very fragile and seem to suffer screen burn easily. Just like a computer has a screen saver for that reason she stated they have had several complaints where the Channel 7 symbol has burned in the corner of the screen. She recomended to me for a big screen tv a rear projection one. I personally at the moment have an 80 cm "normal" Sony tv that does me well.

I beleive the technology will improve this issue over the 6-12months hopefully. But I dont beleive getting a rear pro or just a standard tv is necessarily the better way to go over a plasma or lcd in as far picture quality is concerned. Perhaps more channel flicking is in order to help avoid this problem?

Im looking at getting this home theatre system
http://www.pioneer.com.au/home_enter...dvr/index.html matched with this plasma http://www.pioneer.com.au/home_enter...6hd/index.html What are your professional thoughts on both these systems matched together and sounding good in a small/med room size?

Plasma burn in is certainly something that can happen - it's one of the reasons they aren't very well suited to displaying computer text. Most of the better units have pixel shifting functions often called an orbiter but the default setting is probably to have it turned off. It is a VERY good idea to turn it on as you set the unit up.
One of the worst offenders for plasma burn in is DVD players with a static menu that says DVD or similar - these cause about 50% of the reported issues. Very few people are likely to suffer issues with the station logos as they are deliberately watermarked to avoid that problem. Even if it does happen most units have a screen flush function that will clear the burn in (Pioneer and Panasonic certainly do) but at the expense of some small drop in display life. While on that topic it is always a good idea to set the contrast and brightness settings as low as you are comfortable with for normal viewing. The stated life of the units (for those telling the truth anyway) is the amount of use required for the panel to reach 50% brightness so running at lower brightness levels not only minimises the chance of burn in but extends the panel life. Cheers Russ

LG one here.. Not sure of size/model exactly.
There's many people that will say by Sony/panasonic etc etc and that LG's suck. Meh, we get perfect pictures from it and does the job more than fine. If you want crystal clear images, get an LCD. |

Plasma Burn on boxing day test is a crock of rubbish. I had my Panasonic on from 9am to about 9pm on channel 9.,... ( love the 9s ! )..... When they go to an ad break, the logo disappears, and resets the 3 anodes inside each pixel. You need to have a STILL image for about 3 hours for screen burn.
I can believe that people "know" a "friend" who says rubbish like 1. Oh dont buy a plasma, the pixels drop out 2. Wait until they drop in price ( typical people who hold off forever ) 3. LCD is much better ? 4. The picture quality is no good ? ( are they blind ) 5. You cant fix them ? ( buy a 5 year warranty ) oh yeah, , and the best... 6. Oh yeah, , they wear out in 10 years or so,,. ( can you imagine what we will buy in 10 years for $1000 ? Anyone who has a 42" plasma in 10 years will be a loser ! AC/DC |

I ended up with a set of Cerwin Vega (USA) speakers. I got a good deal on the set, including a very cheap upgrade on the fronts from 2 way to larger 3 ways. CV are by no means audiophile level speakers, but were very good for the price, and handle both DVDs and the type of music I listen to very well. But your ears will hear different things, so try other brands that suit your budget.

I'm a bit of a badge snob myself when it comes to the AV gear, which is why mines all Pioneer. Haven't had any dramas with it so I've kept being their stuff.
Size wise those speakers will suit. Bose make very good small speakers, though will set you back more.

I agree, love BOSE, great sound, great quality, but cant afford it. But as you say, as long as you dont have issue with it, and it produces nice, clear, crisp sound when playing movies or music, then thats all you need. Especially for the size room I have. I dont beleive in killing a room with 10000w of receiver power and having 2 storey high speakers with 15 subs hanging off it in a 2m x 2m room (slight exagerration I know). Sure it sounds like death on the back of a semi, but its over kill and an expensive one at that, hence the need for building a system to suit not only personal needs but room sizes. To me, this will be a classy and sophisticated system that will match my tastes I reckon. All I wanted to find out was if the units I picked were compatible ok and are able to do the job I need it to without it looking of sounding cheap or nasty.

Is bose good in home theater?
Generally with audio guys doing live sound/theater/production etc.. Bose stands for Bring Other Sound Equipment. We have bose PA at our schools, sucks a big one. |
