Just walk in. They can't touch you or follow you. I do it all the time if I leave the store to get something from the car and then return.

Of course they can 'touch you and follow you' - you are entering private property and must agree to their 'conditions of entry' to enter.

If a condition is that you must join their club then they have every right to refuse you entry or have you removed by force if you manage to slip in.

The fact you do it all the time doesn't mean it's right or OK.

If you are a card holder you are allowed to bring two guests in with you, also under 18s don't need to be signed up.

They have an optometrist, hearing aid center, and tyres for cars in stock.

Hi there...
You could be sneaky and ask someone outside if you could tag along with them?
Make a few purchases and pay. I've been with a friend before, got in and paid seperately, and didn't ask for membership card. Could be worth a try.

I have been to the Docklands Costco once and once was enough. There is no way I would pay $60 for the privilege of buying a palette of toilet rolls from China. The membership is an elaborate marketing ploy and massive money making rip-off. I don't want or need 2kg of chocolate biscuits.

Aldi much the same...no baskets...gotta pay for a trolley, buy all their Aldi no-brand crap, two people working the till and a massive queue, pay for a bag and then fill the bag yourself.

I stick to Woolworths and IGA...say what you want about the Coles & Woolworths duopoly but at least the profits stay in this country and they provide a consistent and reasonably decent shopping experience.

You must produce a card when purchasing. It's scanned to close the sale.

And for many other people it's the bees knees.

I'm the opposite. I hate shopping so buy in bulk, and I would gladly pack my own boxes / bags and wait a little longer in a line if it means I get a discount at the till.

You 'pay' for the trolley at Aldi as an incentive to return it. Coles and Woolies factor in lost trolleys as an expense they add to each item much the same as the shopping bags and extra staff they employ to make your experience better. The 'free' bags, the 'free' shopping trolleys and the 'free' baskets are anything but free. You are also paying a surcharge for your shopper dockets - even if you don't use them.

Aldi and Costco run a different business model that is a huge success in other countries and is slowly catching on here.

Aldi and Costco also don't send every cent off shore. They pay local land rates and tax, they pay local floor staff, they pay local maintenance workers, local truckies, local rents for warehousing, local builders to put the places up and those taxes go to our government.

If you want to stick with Coles and Woolies take my hot tip and shop in a centre where there is also an Aldi.... they price match the staples that Aldi sell to remain competitive.

Yes, I should have been more clear / specific - have you removed by force by people allowed to do so.

Once you've settled down have a look here.... http://www.campbells.com.au/ There is no membership 'massive money making rip off' but the catch is that you have to have an ABN. No ABN, no shopping.
Where do you think the local corner store gets their stuff from .

All Costco are doing is letting the general public get a similar discount.

One of our local Coles stores has trolleys that take coins or tokens.
You don't pay for them, it's a deposit, you get it back, and they don't have to pay anyone to round them up from the carpark or local streets, it's no big deal.

I think a lot of Aldi's 'no brand crap' is made in Aust, have a close look at some of the stuff in Woolies and Coles.

And as for your "provide a consistent and reasonably decent shopping experience"......... that's a bit of an Oxymoron

I joined, it was straight forward, signed up online, credit card payment and print out their receipt.

The Costco carpark turned out to be a pleasant surprise with extra space between parked cars

Walked inside handed over the printed receipt within 2 minutes had my photo taken and members card produced.

As for the products, there is a wide choice and no doubt you need to know what the street price but that's the case everywhere.

5 ltrs of Mobil 1 at $51 (if I recall) is that a good price?

TV's/printers/PC's at very good prices. Tyres seemed to be well priced. Fuel $1.35/ltr...

I've walked in twice to the Northlakes store now without a membership.

Not convinced yet that a membership is worth it. Prices were good - but can be had elsewhere for the same money usually.

I am a member of Costco in NSW. Visited the Northlakes store while I was up on a Qld visit recently. The only negative thing I could say is the Northlakes store don't sell liquor as they don't have a licence yet. On a positive they are the only Costco as far as I'm aware to have a fuel outlet at the store location.

Being conservative, I will save at least $400 a year probably more, just from buying fuel from Costco. Paid $1.37 this morning while my local BP was at $1.62.

Wife & I were a bit hesitant but, once we looked at it. Was convinced. Wife knows most prices at Woolie's & Costco were cheaper.
Granted you have to buy in bulk with most stuff, but that to me means less time shopping. Win win.

My car runs fine using their fuel, next time I go there it will be with a very empty fuel tank. The only thing you need to be aware of is that you must use a credit card and pre-nominate a value, if you select $100 you can fill up to the value of $100, if you use less then your card is credited the difference.

Some updated info for Sydney residents. Costco at Crossroads (Casula NSW) has a fuel outlet....or a 'Gas Station' as the yanks call it on the Costco website
