Just wondering if it's possible to completely remove and delete/omit the steering wheel radio controls from an AU Series 1?
I have upgraded to a Sony BT4050 head unit that connects, via Sony's app, to a Bluetooth enabled device (tablet/phone), therefore making the controls redundant. So, I'm just wondering if it's possible to remove the controls entirely. As the original controls work by differing the electrical resistance across the circuit, I would think that cutting the wiring for the radio controls would affect the controls for the factory cruise control. Has anyone removed the radio controls entirely? *I know that the airbag has to be removed and have done so previously when replacing the clockspring... I'm interested in simply knowing how to completely remove the steering wheel radio controls so that they are no longer fitted to my car. Thanks for any help. JC and Gk did a how to on steering wheel removal.
http://www.fordforums.com.au/vbporta...?articleid=214 With the wheel off you can get to all the wires etc. Probably just as simple to leave it there, it looks unbalanced when its missing. UK

Remove the airbag, the two screws that hold the controls and unclip the connector. I removed mine from my AU2 ute as I have an after market head unit as one of the buttons was missing. The problem is you end up with a gap where the controls were. I suggest just leave them. I'll post a photo later.

Greatly appreciated ... Would be interested to see the pic when you get the chance.
When you removed the control, did you "cut" the control from the loom? I've got cruise control, and don't want to mess that up... The other thing I'm considering is removing the plastic housing, wrapping the circuit board in electrical tape and hiding it in the steering wheel housing out of the way behind the airbag (if there's room) so that it can be refitted if I ever need to sell the car. |
