Small engines; 200kms/day @ 100km/h?

So many things to look at with small TDi vehicles ..... all i can say is ... if you get one ... don't get auto (especially VW's and their family of vehicles) ... not really to do with DSG issues ... but with the issues with blown turbos and "runaway diesel" issues.

If it occurs ... at least with a manual you can stall the car and save the engine from seizing.

It's more common than you think .... with the auto it will still run until it comsumes all of your engine oil and melt into a block. Hee hee.

can't turn it off by key when this occurs .... it keeps running.

I do have a soft spot for smaller cars though .... my old little Proton was good for 5.5L/100km back in 99 ... and fun to fling around backroads.

But .... also to add to this ... I can get 6.5L/100km from my FG XT with ZF on the highway ... with plenty of room and comfort ... while it is coasting along just under 1500rpm ... this is the 4L I6 as well. It's not just small cars that get decent fuel economy.

Has to be a manual, due to cost will stay with a petrol engine.

had looked into gas but didn't really work out cheaper, the LPi would be great but not within my budget (unless that powerball and his little friends goes my way )

Not the only car we have, this one is just the one to get me to and from work

I'd definitely only go manual in a small car as well for my preference if it was me.

I have a Mazda 2 Auto . Done a round trip to Toowoomba from Gold Coast when it was new and got 6l per 100 . Will cruise on 110 all day . Pretty comfortable for me at 6'2 and 108kgs.
The Mazda 3 we have has done 200k no issues and probably gets 7l on the highway.
City driving is where you save the fuel . A Falcon might get 7.5l - 8L on a trip but will ave 12 in city driving . I ave @ 6.8 - 7.5l in the mazda 2 in city driving.

I have been driving a polo diesel manual (of course, there is nothing else in france, and thats excellent :-D) I think its a 1.4.
Sitting on 130 it does around 4.5 litres per hundred all day! Crazy, cant believe it really, and then when you get on the 90 zones, with the family so just cruising with corners, not just flat roads either, it was well into the 3's.
I love coming out of the toll booths 10+ lanes wide with no lines and going for the 3 lanes at the end! Endless laughs!
Also the little car hits 180 no problems. Up steep hills, like that which australia has never seen you have it floored and it drops speed and you get passed by beemers or whatever but hills dont go for ever!

Had to change-up to a smaller car earlier this year, due to doing 140+kms a day for work.

Picked up a new Peugeot 208 1.6lt auto. Does 5-6lt/100kms, about 780kms. Drives great, really agile and handles very well. Great interior.

The 1.6 auto, has multiple modes, a lot like what you'd find in the Falcons. Normal driving, a sport mode and finally a sequential shift. It's surprisingly fun to drive and can hold it's own.

I took a 1.5L Mazda 2 over to Tasmania where most of the driving was between 100-110

Other than hills, the Mazda loved it.

I have an 08 VW Jetta 2.0 diesel 6 spd Dsg. 55 litre tank. All city traffic driving. 650 to 700km per tank. Highway driving anywhere from 1100 to 1300km per tank. Once saw DTE show 1400km... but thats crazy. At 100kph will easily drop into the VERY low 4's. Yes maintenance is expensive with the dsg oil every 4 years or 60k but taken to a euro specialist it was cheaper. A lot cheaper.

My Pajero which is a '14 VRX gets 1000+km per tank on the highway. Around town not so great. Both sit about 2000rpm at a gps 100kph. Only problem with mega torque in a small diesel is that its too easy to spin the front wheels around corners... if you want to be in a hurry.....

All good till a head gasket goes in these Volkswagen tdi engines. Your up for $3k to 3.5k out of warranty.

Depends which egine youre talking about. The 1.9 tdi is pretty bullet proof according to reviews on line.

On the highway I can average 4.7 l per 100 and around town about 7 and I am not gentle with the throttle

I had a 1.4 tdi in my old golf bluemotion always serviced, the month after warranty ran out. The head gasket went. I mostly drive @ 100 k's on country roads so wasn't getting pushed that hard. Good economy and nice to drive but my god when something goes wrong be prepared to re-mortgage your home.

Probably because the 1.9 is an old pushrod Skoda engine.
