Red face Need help locating an part.

I don't believe BMC's luck, that black cat is back. The aircon wont turn off.
I assume its the pic below that gone, but where is it in the fan system? Remember its a 1999 Fairmont. I had a look at the wreakers today but could find/see it.

You need a new Motorola transistor (Motorola 2N5686 - Ford used to own Motorola) for your fan speed controller. World Wide Electronics have them http://members.iinet.net.au/~worcom/. See this thread (both pages) and the associated links for how to repair it: http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=11319441

Silver box which is behind the glovebox.
Yes it is a bastard to get to, but it can be done without breaking anything.
The main A/C or HVAC fuse in the engine compartment will turn the fan off until you replace the transistor.

Note most second hand ones will also have a rusted failed transistor so it usually best to replace that and take measures to stop that happening again. If you do buy one from a wrecker make sure there is no rust (or evidence of past rust) on that transistor case (marked 2N5685 in your pic) . If there is rust, it has shorted and will be dead. Note there are three screws holding the fan speed controller (shiny metal box) in place and the one closest to firewall can be hard to find. You have to wriggle the box and pull it gently to get it out. Also put the vacuum cleaner nozzle in the hole where the box fits to vacuum out all the leaves and debris that collects in there rusting out both the transistor casing and the heater box.

Was looking at the wreaker to 'practice' without damaging mine . You never know might get lucky. Are they all the same for Series I, II and III? (and BA ?)

No after AU they went to an integrated HVAC system. And as indicated at the end of that thread a few have a Bosch blower module rather than the transistor based circuit.
