I have been told that you can't rebuild them but if you can,by the time you buy the bearing and change it you could have picked up a good second hand one from the wreckers, I recently got one for $150

You are just changing the bearing, not rebuilding a compressor
After you take off the pulley the bearing is under there, you dont lose gas or take the compressor out of the car or anything like that. If the compressor itself breaks they are normally beyond repair Though if you had to pay someone to do this for you it would be cheaper to go to a wrecker with labour rates nowdays Do it yourself and the cost is $10 |

I got a genuine Ford refurbished one for $200, IIRC. They had a heap that they had to send back after a recall from some early series 1's, they then had tehm rebuilt and are selling them cheaper then brand new but still with a full parts warranty

if you have the old one out any local bearing place should be able to match one up for you.
