Yanks seem obsessed with the 'dangers' of rear mounted tanks.
Falcon and Commodores had them behind the bumpers for years and I dont recall it ever being an issue.

Interestingly here in Australia stuff like the Prado, Landcruiser and FJ Cruiser have a sub tank behind the rear bumper, yet the sub tank isnt available in the US and other countries.

Why did BA Falcon move tank forward of rear axle? Foiled export attempt to the US?

1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees, 1933-2001 Jeep Cherokees and 2002-2007 Jeep Libertys

It seem to be a bit more than just tank location; also a propensity explode in flames when hit even at low speed.

Quote:
According to the DC-based consumer advocacy group, as of July 1, there have been at least “370 fatal fire crashes of 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees, 1933-2001 Jeep Cherokees and 2002-2007 Jeep Libertys that have resulted in 503 deaths, at least 167 of which are deaths due to fire.”

While crash records differ between organizations, according National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatal Analysis Crash System (FARS) data, known fatal fire deaths have surpassed 70.

Chrysler points out that the these are total cases. The Office of Defects Investigation says that as of June 2013, there had been at least 32 crashes and 44 deaths when it comes to fatal rear impact fire crashes involving Grand Cherokees. They also identified 5 fatal rear impact crashes that resulted in 7 deaths in Libertys.

My friend blew the back of their patrol out with the rear under tank rupturing while off-roading. That was not fun.

I'd hate to crash into the back of that while driving my Combi.

Must be more to it then just a rear petrol tank, as been said before most of our aussie made cars had tanks in the rear. I seen heaps of rear end crashes without them blowing up.
Dare I say it 'don't hold back' jeep fix the problem.

Yanks seem to be paranoid about rear tanks. I suppose when you have 10x our population you potentially get enough (quantity not necessarily percentage?) tank explosions from rear end collisions that its more of a concern.

This one regarding Crown Vic (outboard fuel tank) seems to indicate that even in statistically more dangerous police environments it's still rare: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Cr...oria#Fuel_tank

From my understanding most of the paranoid came from the Pinto: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Pi...nk_controversy

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think he said 76 people have been killed involving fire with rear mounted jeep fuel tanks ?
I don't recall anyone being killed in a falcon or Commy from a fiery crash.
