Default Xy replica or Mustang

Hi all,

Back on the forum after a few years away.

'm looking for a new toy and im not sure what way to go. I've always wanted a Mustang but of course an XY is always right up there in the back of my mind.

I plan on keeping the car for a very long time so what are your opinions. A high end XY replica or a similar quality Mustang. Will definetly be a fast back, preferably a 69-70 but i wouldnt pass up a 65-68. Budget is around $80k or so.

Which ever vehicle you choose, may I suggest the following. Create an absolute bullet proof engine of around 350bhp to 400bhp. spend the rest of the money on doing the suspension / brakes in such a way that although you may "only" have 350 bhp the engine can run all day, the car is smooth and firm to drive cruising / hauling but most importantly it can stop very quickly. And, if necessary, get some advanced driving lessons to ensure all your hard work does not come undone the first time you push it.

Cheers Vincenzo

Id be looking at getting a 'Stang like this -
http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...-3312516/?Cr=9
Boss 302, could probably bargain it down a little to fit your price

Another Boss 302 -
http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...3409571/?Cr=33

Or, this and restore -
http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...-2852123/?Cr=1
manual 428 Cobra Jet

Seems to be a fair bit of choice out there in 'Stang land. Nice as they are, an XY replica isn't original and I much prefer the 'Stangs look and image so i'm biased (i've owned 2 'Stangs)

I had a 69 Mustang Fastback and a 76 XC Coupe. I found every 2 and their dog had a Mustang, especially Coupes all though I started seeing lots of fastbacks just as I was selling mine. There was always a lot more interest in XC Coupe than the Mustang.......

Biggest bang for your buck will be a mustang , depending on what sort of pony you are looking for
$50k will buy you a nice XY GT replica

Long term I think the XY is probably the wiser investment, as I think there will always be a market for them and you will be able to move it on without too many problems - lets face it who doesn't like an XY

I wonder is it, because we as Australians can relate to them more........

Due to the rising value of 'original' muscle cars, replicas are getting dearer and donor cars are getting hard to find regardless of make and model. Go with something you will enjoy owning and driving. I made the mistake of compromising a few years ago and never formed an attachment to the car I bought. I didn't lose money, just the enjoyment. What do you want more?

If you can get a Mustang for a good price go for it.

They are relatively cheap in the USA for a good reason, there were so many made and there is still a lot of them around.

The same is starting to be the case here, they are being imported by the shipload.

Check out something like Unique Cars Magazine and you’ll see the common varieties are a dime a dozen.

It’s only the rare variants that are worth anything.

Personally I’d go for a local Hardtop.

Rarer on the road, it’ll hold its value just as well as a garden variety Mustang and will look way cooler.

For starters, forget all about "future value" Cars are NOT a financial investment.
It's like marriage: Do you pick a wife you think you can sell for a profit? Or somebody you want to spend the rest of your life with?
For that money, buy the car you fall in love with!

Personally, I would steer clear of anything that implies the term "replica."
If you LOVE XY's and want to buy a nice one with a thumping V8, great, but don't put a couple of stickers on it and pretend its something its not.
Why not look at re-importing a Rhino from SA?

As much as i would have no hesitation in owning the blue Mustang , at that money , I would consider a original matching no XW / XY GT in preference .
However , if the blue mustang was priced at $40-$50k , then I would it against any replica GT.
It's going to be a difficult decision , especially when you've narrowed your decision, and then go out to view the car in the flesh ... Their are some very good ground up/bolt off replica GT's, and they are going to look super shiney against a 40yr Mustang, with one could expect a checked history .
I agree, if you've the sort of money to spend , the manual 428 Cobra at low $40's (completed at $?), will be a better buy against the equivalent spend replica .
Some years ago , I thought I would look at buying a XW GT Phase 1 , and there wasn't anything less than $100,000, with very good replicas at $70+
The replica is cheap when you compare it to asking price for the matching no originals , but the originals can ask those $, but I am not sure , replica's will continue to have a strong following at those asking prices .
Just my 2c - for what it's worth ?

I should have added , I mean no harm to those whom own a replica . My point , if I was asked to decide between the two , I would favour the Mustang ahead of a very , very good replica.
It's different strokes for different blokes ... No harm or malice intended to those owners .

Cheers for all the feedback. Gives me a lot to think about.

Just as an example there is this on Car Sales and there are a couple of complete nut and bolt resto xy's for similar or more money.

As much as I love the XY, you will probably have access to a greater range of original spares for the Mustang should you need them. Repo parts available for an XY are mostly rubbish, as is my understanding...

I tend to think the opposite, for the $$'s, a rare nicely restored Cobra Jet or Boss Mustang is a true collectible and would be a better investment, especially as you could sell it on the international market, keep it LHD of course.

An XY replica I would expect to be cheaper, and as its a replica, it doesn't have to be 'factory' so can have modern gearboxes/brakes/suspension, fuel injection on the ole Clevo or even a modern quad cammer so therefore, biggest bang for your bucks.

@fitzy, the 428CJ may be a decent restorer, trick is to get the best/rarest/highest optioned car you can and restore that, it costs the same amount to paint/restore a 6 potter base model as it does the rarest of rare 'Stangs. What's an decent panel/paint job worth these days? I'd guess you'd have it looking and running pretty slick for $80k all up.

Jump onto just cars website and search for XWGT. Keep an eye on Australian muscle cars and ford muscle cars. They are there and come up regularly.
