My brother sent me this pic today from his wife's Focus with less than 25k on the clock. It's a manual petrol S model.
I'm a bit surprised to see this as I haven't heard of this happening before. Anyone else had this problem?

It's a current recall. My parents had it done last week.

So the dealer replaced both driveshafts yesterday with different part number driveshafts. They told him that it was a known issue but "not enough for a recall"

I don't know. They most likely have beefier driveshafts due to the extra torque.

Should I inquire about the Mrs car. Seems ok but today it made a noise that sounded like running over a coin and flicking up. She said it has happend once before. Drives fine to me.

My brother said theirs didn't give any indications at all in the week before it went. No vibrations or sounds at all.

I rang Ford this morning and ours is fine as it is a German built. Recall is on the early Thai built ones

So my brother got a recall letter in the mail from Ford yesterday to get the driveshafts replaced. Talk about timing, it was in the mail when it broke on Friday!
I guess those of you who are affected will get one soon. In hindsight its probably a 2013 not a '12.

I got a Thai build Ford focus sport with build date of 08.12.2012, I have checked my VIN number on the ford ETIS site and it do not mention the recall, and no letter yet,
Is it only the vehicles build on 2013 are affected ? does anyone have more information on this ? Thanks. |

It seems strange that it isn't classed as a safety recall. They have just slipped it out as a letter.
I guess they think a driveshaft failing at speed isn't a safety issue.

Happily had all this taken care of at the 30,000km service, having only got the notice the night before the service booking.

After all the testing they found that they will only break at a high torque load, that is only when you go to drive off from standstill. None have failed whilst car actually in motion.... that is why it is not a safety recal..

wife baught a focus trend last year,2013 build. She was driving home Christmas eve and car basically collapsed under her. Eventually got a toe truck and had to park the car up until jan 8 when ford dealer opened up after holidays. they replaced the front left drive shaft and i went to collect it. 2 DAYS later i started to hear a noise from left passanger side, i was about 4km from ford dealer so headed straight there and all the while noise was getting louder. They looked the car over and said they would have to replace the drive shaft again as it had cracked. ive now got a recall from ford to replace both front shafts. On top of this i have begun to notice recently a shudder as car excelorates as if gear box is loose. Anybody have similar issues. regards Mick |

Got the recall but already had it replaced after it broke in the middle of a busy intersection.
