Yours may be a Photoshop to show the design influence of the new Mercs but go to the Mercedes Forums and you’ll find a lot of photos of cars from other manufacturers with actual Mercedes and AMG badging. It’s a trend all over the world.

Here’s a local Kia Optima for sale in Victoria.

Everyone wants to show their roots come from an AU Falcon.

The very first performance car I drove was a part 4WD 2L 4cyl turbo smaller Falcon copy just like the above.

It would be nice to get an upscale car whose brand belonged in the Ford empire.

Then I actually bought a compromise.

I love these AU Mercedes threads. Never get old. Something about imitation being sincerest forms & all that I really like both designs.

Ah well that's one way of driving a new Ford Falcon post-2016. Kia after all did make the mighty Ford Festiva, so in a way they are a Korean Ford equivalent....

Plenty of fake Chevrolet commodores going around, they're actually made by Holden and re-badged.

At least Chev and Holden are both budget cars and branches of Government Motors. Merc and Kia have about as much in common as a Whale and a Mouse...

Commonly used as shuttle buses in China. These feel about as flimsy as a Daewoo or Holden Commodore. Guess the only thing Mercedes in these is the engine..

It's long been said that there is nothing innovative in current design. With the limitations imposed by pursuit of the same goals (aero efficiency, weight reduction, fuel economy) it is perhaps inevitable that the car has evolved into a relatively uniform shape with only badgework, grilles and headlamps left to provide a degree of personalisation. Not so much so at the top end of the market where individuality and brand identity are still more essential than some of those other drivers of design but I find that most cars now will struggle to pass the 100M identity test from any angle.

Cheers
Russ
