Hi there FF Team,
I'm not sure if this issue has been discussed before, however I note on FF that the edit function for authoring a post is only open for a limited time. I was wondering if it has ever been considered to leave this "edit" function open? This is a pretty common feature on other car forums and it assists with a few handy functions for the author: - ability to copy the post code at a later time - ability to edit or make corrections at a later time - abilty to edit an opening post of a "build thread" and add some hyperlinks for specific work, in the style of an index or contents list, as the work progresses. Refer to this page for an example of my third point above: http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulle...achine-152857/ Cheers.

Alot of forums are going this way now, aswhen someone has a hissy fit, they go back and delete all the text out of their posts, and threads end up with huge holes in them.
I'm not sure if it can be done in specific areas, but the my ride section would be a good idea to have it open. Rest of the forum, not needed! |

Any comments from a moderator on this one?
Cheers.

I seem to remember Russellw answering the same question a few years back.
The issue is (like said above), people going back and changing their posts after other people have given specific responses to the original text. You easily end up with chopped up and out of context threads, which I find really annoying on other forums. A pet hate of mine is when people sell their item or get an answer to their question and go back and delete their original post with something like "edit: resolved, thanks". That post or question could have helped someone in the future, but now it's turned into a useless thread with no context. Personally I have no issues with people correcting themselves in further posts (and I've done it). So yeah point is, I can see the benefits you've listed, but I guess I disagree overall because I think the negatives outweigh the positives.

I think its a good idea, as a thread goes on, you may re visit it when you have more info to add. Or you have solved your problem You can edit a specific detail.

I've seen some forums have a feature that even disallows replying if a thread has not been active for 12 months.

Ive been a mod on here, & its very hard keeping up with all the post's. So a permanent edit would be a great idea.

The current 30 minute edit period should be enough to cover most situations and failing that a PM to a mod or admin will get the edit done for you so it's hardly a big issue.
Cheers Russ

I totally agree that the current edit period should remain on the AFF.
If I have to add/delete/correct something after the edit period has expired, I quote myself with the original and notate in the new post my correction/s - with apologies. I think this is helpful in minimising any confusion for members following the thread, especially if my incorrect post is one or more pages back. Cheers!

I often make silly typos or slips. I write XH when I mean ZH which makes the whole post seem silly, or say MAF instead of MAP, etc.
However as long as Mods don't get too annoyed with me requesting fixes, it should never be a huge issue. A good option, if it were even possible, might be to allow editing to stay open until a reply is posted?
