Do you carry a spare tyre?

Just wondering if you have a spare tyre or not. I know some people have custom stereos etc and remove it completely. I was told you needed either:
a) a roadworthy tyre, jack etc; or
b) no tyre at all.

Secondly, if no, have you ever been caught without one? Ie. got a flat and no spare.

Note: I'm referring to your daily driven car.

i do now but i didn't for a while.. Had a can of sealant and one of those ciggie lighter compressors... Did absolutely jack $hit on a 35 series tyre. Probably put just enough air and foam into it to completely ruin my rim if I drove 10 yards so I called a tow truck :(

no- custom stereo install far more important lol

rather have bass 99.99999% of my driving life then worry about that- I know it'll cause some arguments but I don't think I'm ever in a situation where I can't get to a servo for air, a tyre store to fix it etc or worst case, ring the Mrs to bring the spare from home- running Y rated tyres to 300km I don't think there is any real possibility of shredding the tread from the sidewall or having a blowout-

Truth is- I found it more puzzling that

a/ ford supplied a jack that won't fit under the jacking points of a T series

b/ if you drove up onto a block to get the jack under- the locator on the jack twisted that badly the jack didn't work anyway

I've got one of those compressors and a can of slime too- who knows- maybe it will work if I need it to........

I've never had to change a tyre on the side of the road in 9 years of driving- that's enough good odds to help me enjoy my music lol

I always carry a spare tyre ... and I check it regularly .. nothing worse than needing to change a tyre and finding the spare is flat as well ... LOL

I don't carry one. No reason other than not having one. I need to though, oh and i might as well get a jack and wheel brace!

Always have carried a spare tyre, just dont tlike the idea of middle of no where and a flat tyre, although I drove around without a wheel brace for quite a few months then reliased it was in the garage.

Tyres these days have come along way from the cross ply trye, most steel belted radials are pretty good at resiting punctures if you look after your tyres, and otherwise in 90% of cases when I have picked up a nail or a screw the tyre didnt go down at all till I pulled it out.

Yep have the spare tyre and a hydraulic jack. Have needed it twice. Bloody roadworks!

I carry one, but only because its a ute and I dont need the space it takes up. Don't really need it though - I carry a puncture repair kit (supercheap $15), and a 12V air compressor (Repco $50) so can repair tyres on the go anyway.

What ИИИИes me is whenever you read a motoring journo article and they rant and rave about space saver spare tyres. Who gives a flying bannana? They save space and weight, i'd much rather a space saver over a full size heavy as a bull spare. (unless you live in the middle of the bush of course).

The only car in this house hold with a spare is the Wife's car. I have never carried a spare in any of my other cars, its was a bit hard to fit a 15x29x18.5 in the boot when we had the coupe and the XC's boot was full of fuel system and battery box's. And as for the XR nop no spare in that one either.

I believe the roadworthy tyre/no tyre rule is correct - that's how I got jibbed when I bought my first car. The spare tyre wasn't roadworthy, but it got a RWC. I was told they just remove it for the test and put it back in later.

I haven't been caught out, I do have a spare and have used the one on my old car a few times due to punctures or valve issues, but my current car has never had a flat tyre, the tyre pressures even remain pretty constant. I suppose they wear out before they have issues

I've got a 5 wheel factory alloys set - it's even got the original Yokohama A509 which the previous owner used, but it's still good

yes and if i had a custom setup stereo i'd still work it so you could still keep the spare as well and remove it with little or no hassle,(well if you can afford $$$ to fit a stereo you should be able to work wonder and fit the spare as well) ppl always talk about road worthy vehicles these days etc but apart of that includes your spare,so yeah
i will always carry my spare.

I am carrying one but really question the need most of the time.

I haven't been let down by tyres for many, many, many years.

I don't carry a spare battery or belts (not yet for the Terri anyway) but those items have left me stranded more often than a tyre.

Obviously if going well away from city & towns it would be wise to have one on board but if you need the space I say ditch it. It's under the car in the Terri so I don't know what else I'd use that space for anyway.

I used to not carry one in my old Skyline due to the stereo install in the boot, just carried a can of foam and a small compressor. In the 8 years or so without a spare I only got 2 flats (both parked at work) and I was either able to repair it with the foam one time and the other time I couldn't repair it I work <2k from a 2nd hand tyre joint, so I drove slowly to them and got another tyre fitted.

Having said that, both my Subaru and my Territory both have their spares in as I've moved away from the massive amps and subs of my youth..hehe..

My subie does have a 10" sub but I didn't need to remove the spare as it's in the floor and still accessible.

no i dont carry one for the reason both my cars are tubbed with front runners and no room in either to carry one anyway. A tube or 2 of tyre weld is the only other option, works a treat!

We got a flat recently and I was so glad I had my spare, as it would have taken racq about 2 hours or so to get to us. I always carry a spare, tyre arm, jack, and fluids (water, powersteering/auto transmission, brake fluid)

Yes I carry the stock steel 16" jobbie. And yes, I needed to use it mid last year after one of the 3000A's copped a 2.5 inch long, 0.25 diameter bolt through the rear passenger tyre. Got home and swapped for the front and put the spare on the front. Had a look after the tyre guy had it off the rim, luckily for me I slowed right down and only had to drive a short distance, it was rubbing through the sidewall.
I don't think you could repair that, ever, nor would tyre goo patch it. Besides, you left something that big in, you'd ИИИИ something else up.

Yes, I carry a spare tyre even though its heavier than a warning device:-)

I even carry them in the boot of the cars!! (A tyre I mean, actually both and more items).

I like that women and some men? carry them, but call road service to fit them.

Have a full sized alloy under the back of the ute. Had to fight to get it in the first place as a factory option but have needed it twice.

First time was at a driving course at Sandown in a freak 180, sideways, ripple-strip incident. Swapped the spare on and was on my way in the slaloms.

Second time was a week ago, when backing down the driveway heard something was amiss. Chipboard screw deeply embedded deeply. Slowly pulled onto the nature strip, swapped on the spare, gave it a wash and off we go.

Only drama was swapping them back after the original was repared (spare tyre was different brand so couldn't keep it on). Bloody winch started to jam up and the winch handle linkage broke. A bit of resourcefulness got the wheel winched up OK.

i've had about 10 flats over 5 years. Quite a regular occurance.

Even had 2 flats in one trip, and had to drive on the rim for 100km, mainly drove along the dirt edge, and sparked over intersections.

I really need 2 spares :-)

I have a spare tyre..... never think to check it though... its under the carpet stuff with all the other gear I carry around with me on top

Besides if I get a flat, I will ring RACQ (wouldn't be without them) ... isn't that why people join things like that?????

High Five Chicken – was going to say the same thing.

Currently my spare SP tyre is on the SP and my partner’s spare tyre is also on the SP since I broke 2 tyres and damaged 2 rims. We have the GT tyre as a spare on the SP because it is driven most often and 2 track tyres in each of the other cars as spares for them. So we have gone to great length to ensure that each of our 3 vehicles has a spare of some description – it’s just not worth getting caught without one.

for the poll yes,

and for rwc all you need is a spare, you dont need a jack and brace. had it happen to me, pulled over cause my tyres were a bit 2nd hand and the cop said if you change the really bad one ill let you drive home, little did u know i didnt have a jack and wheel brace so i said to the cop "explain to me how could i have gotten a RWC with out these" he said "you dont need them just the tyre."

Yep, i got 3 spares haha,

My xr6 has 5 x 18 inch alloys, plus i got 2 brand new 16 inch steelies, not that ive ever had to use them yet (dont do burnouts :().

No i dont cart the 2 16s around with me in the car, but i do in the XLS ute when i go out to the farm as theres dirty roads and you never know. :thebirds:

Come across a young bloke in a hotted up toyota something or other. He had a flat front right tyre. no spare but a fantastic sound system.this was on saturday at 8am.I could'nt help him I have a Ford.( No sound system but I do have a sound spare tyre)as I was leaving about 5 of his mates cars stopped( all with fantastic sound systems but no spares) on Monday I went past and he was still there, he had aquired a tent and was getting quite comfortable, while his mates were looking for spare amoung their brethren(they all had fantastic sound systems ,but no spares)Went past on Tuesday and there was quite a tent city springing up(comprised of his mates wanting to support him and others who had flat batteries due to running their fantastic sound systems)I must admit there was some fantastic music coming out of these cars.Anyway one of them must have got the bright idea of contacting the RACQ because as I went past on Thursday there were 4 RACQ vans jump starting cars left right and centre.(and the original flat tyre bloke was bieng towed away)..The irony is intententional. So i suppose you can do without a fantawstic sound system but you really cant do without a sound spare tyre.
