Default replacing a dead fuel pump... help

so my car died last night on the way home... turns out the fuel pump has decided it hates me.

now while im fixing my bike (which i laid down yesterday) can anyone tell me how i go about fitting a new one? Can i do it all through the cover in the boot? The RACV guy left the cover off, so i assume that it can all come out through there.

Step by step guide would be handy.

Thanks in Advance,
Dale

if the cover is off and you can get to the fuel pump (you may need a ea-el fuel pump cover remover (black twistie thing), you pull the whole unit out, replaced pump, drop it back in and screw it back up!

the cover is off already.. he just levered it off with a screwdriver

i was hoping someone was going to say it was as simple as that.

I dont need to prime the pump or anything before it goes in? just drop in, retighten, connect the electrics and im off and away?

Thats what ive seen mechanics do, few different ones aswell. Before you start it click it over to ignition a few times, to build up fuel pressure in the lines again

its a ИИИИИ. dont undo the massive hose clamp around the black ring around it it doesnt actually tighten anything but is there to stop the ring removal tool from slipping off. you can get a large screwdriver and belt the ИИИИ out of it and it will eventually turn and come off. you'll mutilate it tho. Putting it back on is just as fun except when you have it as tight as you think you can get it it'll still leak and need more tightning. good luck.

Whats the tool worth from Ford?

*edit: For Future Reference
Ford dont have the Fuel Pump Cover Remover, though my local tool place has them though, $40.

simple things are never simple when simple people attempt them. I just made that up then...

i cant even get the damn cover off! The tool keeps slipping off, and i just dont think im physically strong enough to get the cover off. Ive even tried tapping it with the hammer to loosen it, but theres rocks and crap in there, so im going to vaccum them out.

Failing that... ill call my brother in law mechanic and see how he goes.

you need a BIG flat-blade screwdriver or something with a flat blunt end. If you use smaller screwdrivers they will be too sharp and break the tabs off. Use a mallet instead of a hammer and bash all of the tabs right around the ring, don't just concentrate on one tab or it'll break.

Vacum out all the rocks and crap from around there and spray the whole ring with WD40 to help loosen it. Keep trying it's not that hard

What old mate said, just bash it with a mallet and a big (blunt) screw driver.

I used a large pin punch, worked a treat.

Never needed that silly tool...

You could also use a RATHER large pair of Adjustable pliers. I use them to remove the Fuel pump ring. Make sure you REPLACE the seal.

Make the tool. It costs about $2 in metal. Do you have a grinder? Do you have a welder? If yes to both, get a nice piece of flat steel from hardware store. About 3-5mm thick is good and about 2.5-3cm wide is fine. Cut a piece that is about 6cm longer than the cover is wide. Bend 3cm on each end. Grind a slot at each end for a tab to sit in. Weld an old socket to the middle of your bar. Now you can apply torque to the cover and down force when doing it back up (need to compress the o-ring).

Easy.

cheers
