Given every country in the world has a police force that use cars, I can't imagine it'll be that hard to find a replacement.

I'm guessing it'll be aurions.

I take on board the ramifications of what you're saying in the longer term, but the initial order would be for 12,000 vehicles for the first 12 months (not 4,000).

Anyway, do you think an ongoing 4,000 every third year is unsustainable as a single order? What sort of numbers would you suggest as an annual minimum to make a viable proposition for an o/s manufacturer to produce/export?

They would only need 12,000 if they dumped every current vehicle though. They would have anything between 1 month old stock up to end of life in that 12,000 so all they have to replace is the rolling stock, which is the 4000 over 3 years. Those numbers would be enough to get manufacturers like Chrysler and AMG interested, but they will only provide near stock vehicles much like Holden and Ford provide currently, nothing like the US style interceptors.

Over the 3 years they would have to do 12000 cars. So 4000 a year. Not 4000 over 3. If that was the case the fleet would have 8000 cars over 3 years old.

This is not a HWY patrol car but I saw a marked Hyundai Sonata cop car the other day. I've seen unmarked i40's and marked Sante Fe's in the past.

From the article.

"Police forces typically replace one-third of their main fleets every three years, or after 60,000km on lease deals, providing an attractive supply opportunity for several overseas manufacturers."

They do - Fiestas and Polos :-) or maybe even a big block 2 litre Golfs.
There are no 4litre turbos or 6litre eights in abundance .
