Test your automotive knowledge and see what you can score out of 30 in this "Ultimate Engine Technology Quiz".
If you enjoyed the quiz, there are a lot more fun ones on there to have a go at. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/engine...ology-quiz.htm |

What a c:"p quiz.
A few trick ones in there. Like "on what stroke does the spark fire?". "What cools most engines?" Qs that are open to interpretation.

Yes, but back in the day when I wielded a timing light on the old 302 Windsor, I seem to recall setting the spark BEFORE TDC!

Some of the answers are questionable.
I would argue about questions 13, 17 and 20 and i didn't go past that. eg question 13 said that the pistons were connected to the crankshaft. I'd like to see how that is done if they are not connected to the con rods first.

Yeah the engine cooling question is a bit ambiguous. Yes, liquid cools an engine but the liquid is cooled by air over the radiator (convection).

You can get 100%, if you simply answer "America is Great, Americans invented everything, and the American way of doing things is not only the best, it is the only way" to every question.
What cools "most" engines? Well if you go to Asia you'll find that air-cooled motorbikes outnumber cars by about 100:1 Add in all the lawnmowers, pumps, gennies, whackers, etc, etc, and I'd say that air-cooled would be way in front. Spark plugs fire before TDC, that's definitely the compression stroke. Engine blocks? Sod it, they tricked me, and I went for the American answer. Chevy 454? Which version? 1970? Nope, it was RATED at 390 horsepower, and known to produce well over 500 from the factory. Apparently flat-heads are OHC. Who knew. Quote:

"What cools most engines"?
Technically, taken to most basic principals of the process, "air" cools all of them. Air cooled? Air. Water cooled? Needs air flow to enable the heat exchange in the radiator. |

18. I was expecting it to be more about how engines work rather than a history lesson. I forget last week let alone all those years ago

Got 23 thanks to reading this thread.
Suck, squash, boom ,spurt is the 4 stroke cycle. Once I understood this at about age 16, engines made sence!! In my work I've worked on large 2 strokes as well. I've never forgot this saying from a good mate and still use it today to let others in on the knowledge. |

An engine should fire just as the compression stroke gets to the top, before top dead centre. Not the power stroke, which is when the piston goes down again. That question was wrong.

22. All earth based engines are cooled by air, either directly or via a radiator.
Engines fire on the compression stroke, the power stroke is what urges the piston back down. Ahwell, I learnt something today, a bit of history. Wouldn't it be fun to build your engine from scratch, even just 1 or 2 cylinders.
