Im starting to have a few running issues with the old lane. Also, I have to put the car through rwc shortly, and I know that there are quite a number of things that will need attention. Should I spend the money to fix the issues, of should I buy something like an EL GLI, and transfer accross all the good stuff from the lane? Also, would the window regs (from an NA Fairlane) fit an EL? What about the manual, would I need a new flywheel?
I know that even with buying a newer car, there would be things that needed fixing over time, but I was thinking of getting a car with a rwc already. I could then strip the lane, which would give me quite a few spares, such as an el head which I would have ported etc....... Oppinions please.... Oh, by the way, I would be going el, not ef, as one, its newer, and two, I already have an EL xr manual ecu, which would be used in the manual conversion...... |

Power window regs would go in an EL.
i'm fairly sure you'd need to change the flywheel. I'd keep the NA... the condition of the exterior & the work done on the interior are my main reasons

Yeah, but I have a few concerns with the body atm. The B pillar isnt quite the shape it should be, which is causing a lot of body creaks, and also, in the rear passanger side, the welds are starting to come apart!! Looks like a result of dodgy repairs from before I had it. As for the interior work, most of it would be able to be placed into an el without a lot of work...... Its just that when I add up the cost of all the little things that need to be done, its gonna be around the 3 grand mark, and im not sure that its worth it..... Plus, once the car is put in for a roady, I only have two weeks to fix anything they find......

Seems like a fair bit of work swapping it over.
How bad is the B Piller?

shame that you're thinking of ditching the NA mate it was a classy LWB.
though getting an EL would be a huge step forward in refinement. as you said, most of the things you've done to the NA can be fitted to the EL |

I think your flywheel will do. I'm pretty sure 3.9 flywheel has its own clutch, 4.0 flywheel has its own clutch as long as the 2 are together you are fine.
PS fix the LWB |

Wayne, to fix the B pillar, would mean finding a new one, and having it welded in, plus having the inside of the wheel arch fixed. At least one of the chain guides is stuffed, and im pretty sure the cam timming is starting to slip as a result, cause it seems down on power the last few days.
After talking it over with the boss last night (wife), ive gotten the ok to go with a newer car. By doing so, ill be left with a number of spares, which means that should something go wrong, its not going to cost me as much in the long run to fix things. Its come down to the fact that we are not willing to spend ANOTHER 3 grand just to keep it on the road, when its only valued at around 5. Also, ive really run out of mods to do to it, so its time to move on, and start a new toy.... |

I reckon stick with the 'lane, mate.
You've come too far with it to just give up on the old girl. |

Cheers Dave. Just been out looking. Came accross a nice 98 EL GLI, only 108 000, full service history, NO accident damage etc etc, interior is almost showroom condition, new pedders lowered suspension, rwc. They want around 9, but he is quite negotiable, so I should be able to get him down to 8..... By the way, its artic blue... what do people think of this colour?
