Default Global Opinions

I get 3-9 calls a day on my land line from these people. No technique seems to slow them down. I think they want me to do some market research for them - and I have no desire to.

Nothing seems to slow them down. Abuse, telling them I will never participate, heavy breathing, no breathing or talking, they just keep calling. I am on the Do Not Call register, but it seems to make no difference.

Any ideas of what to do?

Problem was i could'nt even understand what company they were actually from and i asked a few times.

Just hung up!

Just end call without answering, or let the number ring out, then block caller. I get hounded from time to time from some tnucs trying to sell me rubbish, always the same number except for the last digit. eventually they give up.

The do not call register doesn't apply to overseas callers, only Australian companies.

Do you have to answer the phone?

Our phone (Panasonic) always had an answering machine but we finally set it up 12 months ago.

Anyone I want to ring me has my mobile number - everyone else can wait for me to check messages (but telemarketers never leave a message).

The "beep, beep, beep" at the end of the recorded message is deeply satisfying.

This is the way to go - you don't have to waste time directly dealing with it. I've got 2 old phones here with integral digital answering machines which I don't use you can have - I ditched the landline phone ages ago.
Otherwise you should look into why you need a landline phone, particularly with Naked ADSL, etc, VOIP for phonecalls, etc.

Forward to me and I will lecture the caller on the Franco-Prussian war (or something) for a few hours.

They won't call back.

We are on the Do Not Call register, but it does not stop 'junkcalls' from heavily accented people who call from overseas, and direct them through local untraceable numbers.
We used to get a lot of 'overseas' calls, so we had Telstra make our land line unable to accept these calls. Win there.
We also get unsolicited calls on our mobiles, and these numbers are known only to family and friends, (and to who-ever else ..... hotels, motels, service providers, retailers, car mechanics ...... when you have to provide a contact number), so you can't win on privacy.
Whatever it is, I just say "Not interested" and hang up before they complete their spiel. Annoying, but the way of the world at this time.

I put their numbers in my phone call block feature, never hear from them any more since the phone terminates these calls without disturbing me , peaceful bliss.

ever since we went with NBN and got a VOIP phone number (nearly 12 months ago) not one call has been received except from people we know - so no Indians selling or surveying - zip, zero, naught, none - it is blissful

I feel sorry for the Indian that rings his local pizza shop to order a feed, and gets hung up on as soon as they hear his accent.

I still have a land line as my house alarm uses it to ring my mobile if it is triggered - what are my options moving forward with all this NBN and VOIP stuff? Do I need to retain the landline for the house alarm, or is there another way I can do it?

I heard a funny story on the radio where they set up a fake murder audio scenario the call was answered in the middle of a domestic argument and left off the hook while the actors continued with victim and perpetrator scuffling arguing threatening screaming & then silence , cops immediately turn up due to a report and pick up the phone & proceed to ask caller for details as they are a witness to a murder ! Needless to say they hung up , very funny skit

If they are calling on behalf of an Australian company, find out which company and then promptly inform them you are on the do not call register and you will be lodging a complaint.
If it's an overseas scam call, then there is nothing you can do. Best bet is to get yourself an unlisted number (this is different to a silent number which you have to pay for that privilege! )
That should get rid of the majority.
Apart from that, have your home phone go straight to answering machine without ringing. Legitimate calls will leave a message, others won't.
