That's a weird recall as grass gets caught up in all utes on the farm.

And the BT-50 has exactly the same recall. If you drive in grass check the build up.
I did the Canning Stock Route and we were always checking for the build up of grass.

Apparently the Ranger and BT-50 are more susceptible to having grass caught up round the DPF. Must be a positioning thing.

The old couriers had a skid plate on the muffler that used to collect all manner of debris, the one I was driving started smouldering on a few occasions.
I can only hope this happens to my current work ranger, it'd be nice to stand back and watch it burn.

I wouldnt be surprised, why would they say to take special notice of the sections in the owners manual about stopping, starting and refuelling if the concern was to do with driving over long grass.

'Ford Australia will contact owners of all affected vehicles but, in the meantime, has advised owners to refer to the warnings in the Owner Manual, paying special attention to information relating to starting and stopping the engine, fuel and refuelling.'

Where is the filler position in relation to the DPF and exhaust on Rangers, same side or not?

Any ideas how they going to fix this? I'd have thought this is common to all modern vehicles (cats, DPFs, etc) and largely a matter of common sense .. which can't be "fixed".

Ok. I think we all know that any vehicle can catch fire when driving through long grass because of the extreme heat build up around the catalytic converter and/or turbo areas.
What makes the Ranger unique here ??

Ford & Mazda recognises the fact the vehicles poses more of a risk than others and taking precautionary steps to cover their asses.

How to fix the problem?
In serious conditions, you’d be wanting to do hourly checks under your vehicle to see how much grass is building up in problem areas. You can keep an eye on it, and get a good idea of where and how often you should be checking things out. Keep a long tent peg and some sturdy gloves handy, and use these to fish out the collected debris.

Beyond that, a true ‘solution’ to the problem might be impossible, beyond buying a Unimog. You could go out and buy an older 4WD without a DPF, or one that has exhaust routed in a way that helps keep it clear of collected grass. Your other option is to fashion some kind of plates or skids under your vehicle, which will push the grass away rather than collect it up. But undoubtedly, the best thing you can do is be aware of the problem, and keep an eye on it, no matter what vehicle.
And of course, when you’re travelling remotely, you need to subscribe fully to the idea of self-sufficiency. That means carrying a fire extinguisher, and having it somewhere easy and fast to access if the faeces hit the fan. And, know how to use it.
