A guy here at work has a Kia 4WD, with a 2000kg towbar, but the ball limit is a measly 100kg.

Likewise I've seen aftermarket 1600 and 1200kg towbars on the last few generations of Falcons & Commodores that are only rated to 100 or 120kg on the plate too.

My s80 Volvo is 50kg.

On a 2.3 tonne car! Must be suspension design.

I’m it a fan of the idea, mostly because it seems like something that would be unstable and make the car handle poorly.

How about roof racks with a basket/cage, and either a waterproof cargo bag or hard plastic box?

This is true. Just need to weigh up the risk. Some are more experienced with this than others.

what I don't get is this is to incorporate something to assist in the expansion of the current boot space , but all I see are devises that hinder the loading of the boot to its potential especially if the vehicle its attached to is a sedan

Surely if you add the max 220kg ball weight in the form of a standard trailer hitch which sits on the towball something like 200mm off the rear of the towbar, is different and much safer than adding a frame - as the op states up to 1m off the back of the towbar - with a total weight of 220kg?

Mike_nofx, the second statement is in regards to the weight legalities. Pretty sure comment was made that weight restrictions only apply when hooking up a trailer.

That's... not a bad idea. It places the load more central. I mean it means it's out in the weather, but tarps are a thing and most of my road trips are in the dry season.

I'd need to modify a bootlid, but it's not like those are hard to find and it would be easier than making a box. Hell I could make a wagon conversion and call it something classy, like a shooting brake kit, if I wanted weather protection. Be damn ugly, but I *was* talking about having a box on the towbar...
