Default Interstate Car Transport Duration

The wife and I recently bought a new car from a Perth dealer (won’t be saying names at this point in time), with an estimated delivery date of the 9th of May.

The salesperson emailed me on the 21st of April saying good news, the car has just left Sydney and is on its way to Perth.

I rang them today to see if there were any updates etc.. as it has now been about a week and a half since leaving Sydney.

I was told it will be here a bit sooner now, the 14th. I said “I thought it was going to be here on the 9th originally, and then you emailed saying it could be here sooner as it left Sydney over a week ago”. He said they made a mistake, and it was originally the 19th of May, not the 9th.

So looking at the 14th, that’s stil nearly 2 weeks away. So how long does it typically take a car to be transported interstate then? I was under the impression it would be a couple days, a week at most? Btw it’s not getting tinted or any paint protection, so when it arrives I’d imagine they’d only need it a couple days at most to detail it and do whatever else they do. I’ve got a hunch they’ve made some kind of mistake though...

So, any suggestions?

I think they usually come over on the train stazza.

May be a holdup there?

You’re probably right cobber. The change of original dates made me a little suspicious, and the fact that he said today “it’s literally just left Sydney”, yet a week and a half prior it had apparently already left. Seemed a bit fishy!

Haha, there's nothing worse (or better) than buying a new car.

Drop a cheque for $60k on the salesmans desk and drive home in the car you drove in with.
Then spend countless sleepless nights waiting for the day.

Then that day comes. And your not allowed to hammer it immediately.

My wifes car came from Perth to Gold Coast a few years back when she moved over and it took them, door to door, 10 days. It went on the Train to Melbourne and then Road up to Gold Coast. She didnt book any "express" service or anything. Not strictly the same at Syd to PER but gives you some sort of guide...

I have had several cars delivered from the East to Perth, admittedly they where project cars, but they took 3 to 6 weeks to arrive. Worst time was from Canberra, something about a small railway bridge on that line with limited clearance meaning a shuffle with reloading my car or something like that.

Also they seem to get sent via Melbourne for some reason????

I don't get concerned any more, just know it will turn up eventually, just need patience.

Wouldn't it be nice if people took their job seriously sometimes. Imagine if the salesperson said '' Thanks for your business Mr stazza, your car will be arriving in Perth and will be available for pick up after a detail on the -- of the --''. You could ask for the details of the carrier if it gets drawn out anymore.

Thanks for the replies lads. I wasn’t aware they were transported via rail! I thought they were either shipped to Freo port or just trucked over

I’m just concerned about it being delayed any more because the wife and I are going overseas for a few weeks near the end of the month, and when we ordered the car we were told it’d be here on the 9th well and truly, which would fit in with our schedule, so hence my frustration when he stated a later date. Plus I have trust issues with car salesmen!

Back in 2010 it took a month to get my RTV from Gympie Qld to Darwin by a dedicated car carrier.

BTW, if the OP's car travels by train then you need to have a quick and very good look at the paint in case it gets covered in brake dust. Have seen a number of them that came North through Alice when that was the end of the line and with the first sign of moisture you ended up with rust specs appearing all over the car and in need of a quick cut and polish.

I’ll definitely be giving the car a good look over before I take it. Absolutely. Thanks for the heads up!
