Towing was where the engine did really well, compared to a GM 5.3 V8. It was capable enough to hold 4th gear while pulling over 3500kg, cursing at about 130km/h. The engine doesn’t really like to rev hard. You will probably have to replace the timing chain around 200,000 kms, and of course they have the spark plug issues.
This is the key. The 3V 5.4 was a truck engine first and foremost. This is why the thing is a torque monster and an excellent towing engine in a Falcon.

Always wanted to drive one of these things.

I bit the bullet and went up and saw the silver one in Queensland. Not perfect and needs some work but so happy to have one of these again. Absolutely stock and drove like a dream all the way home.

Theres the Audi A8 4.2tdi V8, but that produces 850NM. but Thats a sub 5 sec car worth big $$$ so not fair to compare I guess.

maybe compare to a 300C diesel you can get one now for under $15K.
I haven't driven one, but driven the jeep with that same engine it has loads of pulling power.
Yeah they didn’t cross my mind, I was thinking of the more common ones, Hilux Prado, Triton etc which are all extremely average performers especially compared to the BMW and MB 3.0 TD.
I’m sure the larger capacity Euro diesels would wipe the floor with it but in saying that the old triton is around 20 years old now so not bad for their day.

Nice! The 3vs are awesome! I chucked a 3.73 in mine, also manual, and I reckon it goes as hard as the T3 TE50 I had previously.

There are a few design flaws you need to be aware of. Depending on how many Ks yours has, make sure you read up on how to change the spark plugs before you attempt.
