What is the tool I need to remove the retaining screws to take the airbag off the steering wheel?

It's a Torx Plus Security bolt (5 point, centre post). It is odd as torx is usually 6 point.
If you use the screw driver method above, once you get them out you replace with Allen key bolts. The screw driver generally doesn't last. Or you can buy the specific bit. I know this SP Tools bit set has the correct one http://www.sptools.com/en/product-li...r-bit-set.html
