hey guys there was no subforum fot this car so I suppose I'll have to post here.
I'v just bought myself a ford meteor, cost me $800 with rwc and it looks very well beaten but is mechanicly a1 (was a mechanics wifes car). I'v spent all my car years playing with holden gemini's so I decided to try somthing different and this was my choice. I understand that the meteor and lasers share most of their mechanicls and was wondering what would be a good engine swap to perform. keep in mind that my last running gem was turbo'd producing about 300rwhp so I'm looking for somthing twin cam and around 2ltrs capacity that I can rebuild for a turbo application. cost isn't an issue as it's going to be a long term project. also if anyone knows about and hardcore brake upgrades that'd be great. |

Hi mate. This could get fun. How much are you looking at spending? I'll go up the list from slowest and cheapest to fastest and most expensive.
B6T = 1.6L DOHC Turbo 100kW (Almost a straight swap, wiring not difficult) BP = 1.8L DOHC EFI 92Kw (Bit harder than the above, wiring a pain in the bum) BPT = 1.8L DOHC Turbo 117kW (Same as above, just add the problem of a turbo) BPD = 1.8L DOHC Turbo 150~kW (Same as above.. and) BPD is from a Mazda Familia GTR. On top of being pretty expensive ($4000 for the engine alone) they're hard to find. Ok not really just have a lot of cash! All those will need the G series gearbox from a KF/KH TX3. You can do a straight brake conversion from any FWD KC or KE Turbo. Their front discs are bigger doing a great deal of stopping power. DO NOT look for anything 2L like from Telstars. They are even slower than the B6T's. You're also going to need a lot of bits from a fuel injected KC/KE TX3. Such as fuel tank, lines, etc etc.

thanks for the help man. I forgot to mention that the car also has to stay auto due to a permanent wrist injury. any of the above engines come with auto from the factory? as for how much I'm planning on spending... how long is a piece of string :evil3:
I don't really have any limit as I'll be continually modifying the car so I wouldn't have a clue, but I'm just not happy unless I'm tinkering with a car. $4000 for a BPD engine huh? I spose that's a running engine in good cond? how about one requiring a rebuild? no point spending the extra for an engine that's gonna be pulled down anyway as it'll be getting the full treatment. I know I must come across as a little crazy to be looking to spend this much on a meteor but hey... I'm looking for somthing out of the norm. Last edited by DryftKult; 25-03-2006 at 10:36 PM. |

Not crazy for doing a meteor, not my choice, front wheel drive, and heaps of power are not really gonna be anything but pointless wheelspin. 4wd on the other hand.
Having said that, my missus loved her BD Mazda (GB meteor equiv), and a BF mazda EFI (GC meteor). I have to admit, the BD was the most reliable car we've ever had, in the end its clocked up over 400,000 kms and still runs pretty well (needs timing gear). 1.5 lt, 5spd, 500 km per tank, although its still not empty at that point. Mate. Forget it. ALL of those engines will destroy (literally, box in pieces under your car on the ground) an auto box, they are weaker then bone. They break G boxes if pushed.
None of these engines come with autos from factory. Biggest you can go is a 1.6L SOHC. Which is like 35kw at the wheels if you're lucky. Choose another platform or don't bother. :togo: Quote:
Edit: How long is your string? To do it properly? Stock about $7-8k without ИИИИing about. Personally for that money i'd rather buy a KF/KH 4WD Turbo for $5k and use the rest on the general upgrades. Also if you wan't to do something unique, either do a rotor conversion (only 2 done on the Laser/323 family in AU) or a V6 conversion (again only 2 done, and i've driven one!) Anything can be done with enough money. As long as it's done properly without restriction.. For example the KA Laser with the V8 which is in the works somewhere on the east coast. Rob

V8 on the other hand, have to be keen to split the floor to accomodate the box etc. Seen it done to mini's though, so yeah theres some enthusiastic people out there. I understand V8's in RWD cars, but a front wheel drive conversion is a whole other animal. Any pics of a rotary or v8 conversion. It would be interesting to see what they do. |

Same floor pan perse` but it's been done before, and the cost/effort was not worth it. The two people that have done it said if they were to do it again they'd buy a 4WD shell and just swap anything else over. 4WD's can be bought for 3k these days if you look hard enough. No pics on the V8, there is one of the rotary floating around but I don't have it. Would you settle for a KLZE 2.5L KC Laser? This thing pulled like anything. I was going to buy it but my car was stolen at the time.. Lack of funds stopped me. It's now residing in Perth running 13s.

thanks for the help guys. bit dissapointing for me though as I need an auto due to this bloody wrist, was hoping an auto from a telstar or somthing would do the job but oh well, I'll just go for a different platform. the main trouble I'll be having is that the car will be my daily driver so I can't do anything that's gonna keep it off the road for more than a weekend at a time. saw a corona on toymods with a 1jz in it and was an easy swap apparently so I may have found another project idea, will just use the meteor as a run around till I get to brisbane.

4WD conversion? Floor pan same Perse? perse you say? So its a bolt in swap, or engineered. Major engineering or minor? Its the rear end that concerns me. Getting the rear diff set up, and the shaft drives to it from the front. Any links to info? Ill still consider doin it. I gotta drive the little mazda, so Id prefer something punchy. Its already EFI, no turb or 4WD. And turbo without 4WD is just not the same. Yeah can buy for $3-4000, but then Im getting someone elses mods and thats like Forrest Gumps box of chocolate. Nah, Id rather do it myself. Spend the $4k on the conversion set up. Get more bang for buck. |

FE3 will be demolished by any BPT, not to mention the BPT has about a million times the upgrade potential.
Still not getting past the original problem, any power will break the auto box. Edit: Nice post on FordLaser.com yet I don't think I can be much more help there either! _
