Apologies if this has been brought up before - I searched through old threads for a while but couldn't find find an answer.
How do you properly dispose of oil-contaminated waste from your garage? I know you can take oils to transfer stations but what about oily rags, absorbents (kittly litter) used to clean up spills, oil filters, etc. I've done some googling and it seems some companies will take these things but, from what I can gather, only on an industrial basis. |

I would start with your local tip, as they may take it or know of a service that does.
You can also try and contact your local council. |

Twice a year my council has a hazardous material disposal day. Its free and over time ive gotten rid of oils and pool chlorine and stuff like that. For obvious reasons they wont take asbestos but theyle take most acids and paints etc. Everything needs to be in containers and contained, but its a free service if you show id to say its your area. They charge for people who arent from the same council area.

Our local council takes oil and oil filters for free, even our local supercheap has a skip out the front for old oil.
Any oily rags i put in a plastic bag and stick in the household rubbish. |

Many years ago one of My Brothers was renting a House in Willoughby (Suburb in Sydney) his neighbour had a Hiace van working for Wards Express. Every few Weeks he'd park It over the Storm water drain in the street & drop the Oil, change the Filter & fill her up with new Oil..Then throw the old Filter in a different Bin (Never His though)...

I filter the oil then pour it into the tank of my old diesel Hilux....
Seriously though, I've never thought about rags, kitty litter, and the like. Honestly I've just always put them in the bin for landfill.
