I have a 91 XR8 and every now and again my auto heats up that much the shifter is pretty much unberable to touch:(???????????

could be somthing stuck in the trans cooler

I've found that the shifter and trans tunnel are very good guages of how hot the gearbox is...
maybe one of the trans cooler pipes are kinked or something??? other than that it buggers me.

Have you got an aftermarket trans cooler fitted? How close does the exhaust come to the shifter linkage? I'd have a guess and say the exhaust is more the problem than the trans heating the shifter.

It's the hole gear box that heats up, Iwas just explaining that it gets that hot the shifter heats up, If I pull the pan off the auto, and the trans cooler has gone would there be bits of brass or copper what ever the coolers made of in the pan????????

Yes. The bits of copper in the pan will be from the auto cooler.
