I haven't changed my sump plug or washer the last few times I've done an oil change. Naughty I know.
Including shipping from a Ford dealer, for a Barra, it appears to be about $15! $15 for a bolt with a little bit of rubber on! Sheesh. Rip central! /end rant |

Mostly because I don't know when it was last changed (I will have to check service logs if Ford ever has.
I just don't like the idea of it starting to leak as I imagine it might! Generally they should be a consumable item but I've just been slack. Just think $15 for a bolt is a bit steep |

Ouch - that's more than Aussie. Which you could assume as it should be a local cost for AU.
They're $10 plus shipping here from Ford - hence the $15. |

I've never changed one. Even when the washer was worn and started to drip a little, I just made a new washer out of leather and lasted for over 100k not a drip.
Cost me a worn out gardening glove. |

$15 is quite reasonable for a special bolt like that. You should look at some prices of sump plugs for other cars.
Sump plugs should be inspected each time they are removed, and replaced if damaged or distorted in any way, including the seal. If in perfect condition there is no need to replace them, and wont suddenly spring a leak if installed properly, and with a film of oil smeared on the seal before fitting. Its not as if they are torqued to yield when installing, although some seem to manage to do this in practice.. |

my fix on my BA was to use an early VTII Commodore LS1 V8 sump plug, magnet tip, and as I worked for a dealer, the seals were readily available!

Given that the Falcon 4.0L oil drain bolt will last for a decade or more $10 is reasonable.
Now $20 for an O ring is a different story!

What on earth are you blokes doing to sump plugs that requires you to buy new ones in the first place?
I can't recall ever having to put a new one in anything. Maybe I need to go out and buy a big pair of multi grips! |

Never changed one in the cabs either...must be some strong (or dumb) mechanics out there...they don't need to be super tight...neither do filters.

What are people's thoughts on these valve type sump plugs ?
https://www.fumoto.com.au https://www.ezoil.com.au/products.html I understand concern with them opening while driving. But there is a following of the fumoto brand with Japanese car enthusiasts. Plus they should be able to be wired shut. I also recal the magnetic ability of the sump bolt is lost. |

I just bought crush washers from auto one for my XR6t sump plug. I remember they were 50cents each. Just bought a few at once, cheap as

Serviced Hundreds of trucks, and never replaced a sump plug, I've had to fetch a few that were dropped in the catch tray, that I would have liked to replace
FYI out Prado doesn't even have a washer or any need for one
