Smile Engine oil for 99 falcon AU

I read the manual it says 5w-30, but I am not sure if it is thick enough for such old car? 10w- 40 better?

And most of the time I am running Gas, should I go for special oil for a gas car?

Please give me some suggestion, Thanks.

I use Penrite HPR Gas 10w-50 in my dual-fuel AU1 Fairmont.

No issues.

AU1s recommended 5w30, AU2s recommended 10w30, despite being the exact same engine go figure.

Ill second Dr Jekkyls recommendation. A 10w Gas oil would be the best choice.

10w30 or 10w40 will be fine.
I like Penrite.

Would people recommend Penrite HPR10 (10W50) in a '99 AU1 with around 250,000km's on the clock?

(I use HRP10 in my commodore so I'd like to use the same oils between cars if I can!).

you could run 10w50 ok - but if you ask me, that'd be a bit thick when warm - you'd likely see less power and increased fuel consumption. personally i'd be really hard pressed to move away from 10w40 (cool states) or 15w40 (warm states).

I'd use HPR5 - 5W-40.

I use fully synthetic 5W30 I have found it to be the only thing to get rid of the famous AU lifter tick.

Anyone know what PRO50 is? That's what appears to be in the car now, according to the workshop receipt I found in the glovebox (they gave it a minor service before we took it).

I gather it's 10W50 already in there?

Can't say I've heard this lifter tick in all my high mileage 4.0s (280k to 650,000km), are you mistaking it for the injectors?
I just put a 5w-30 into my 650k XR6 and she burns it good, it was free. I usually put 20w-50 in there every 5k.

Ta guys... I had a look at the Penrite book in Repco (making use of the 20% discount), and it recommended HRP5 for the AU series (which is odd, I swear the card in Supercheap said HPR10!).

I live in a colder state (Melbourne), so I'll try HPR5 first and see how it goes... I've gotten used to the sound of the engine now running whatever "PRO50" is, so I'll know if HPR5 produces any more ticking noises, or uses more oil etc (if it does, I'll swap it for HPR10 instead).

I have all the gear for my service now and it's going in tomorrow, finally.

Perhaps it was an old book in Supercheap, as I recall Penrite once recommended HPR10 for the AU6.
You'll be fine with HPR5 anyhow.

Well, it's heating up, like 20 degrees lol, but yeah. If you can remember my thread of freak increase in fuel consumption running up about 13l/100km, I've done nearly 15,000km like that, wouldn't be suprised if the cylinders are glazed from bore wash, increasing oil consumption. Dunno. Will put in 20w-50 and see.

Oh wow, 20deg, lol.
Yeah - you never rectified the fuel usage issue? I would have bought another ford by now if it was me.

One step ahead of ya, bought an AU lane last night, 560k, 4.0, cost me 2 grand, bargain. Yeah I never fixed it, she used to return 8.5l/100km, will see if the fairlane can better that. Would have bought a V8 ute but need the coin for a house deposit so a dirty ex taxi will do for now.

Fairlane is dual fuel, 70 cent/litre difference between gas and ulp here so any savings will be marginal, would prefer the boot space. Yep she has the frugal VCT

10w60? What? Why? In what possible application could that be a good thing?
10 is too thin when cold, 60 is too thick when hot! What's going on manufacturers?

You could get some lighter, same brand oil (maybe 10w30?) and mix your own viscosity

After some investigation I'm assured 5/30 is good even for an older AU motor, they were the tightest motors ever produced by ford and have teflon coated pistons, in general they wear so well that wreckers have more low mileage motors in stock than they could ever sell due to the reliability and robust design the AU afforded.

FGII-XR6 is right. I have only got lifter noise since my mechanic put 10W30 in it. I will go back to 5W30 for which the engine clearances are designed.
