Well most of you would have read Damo's other thread about having no oil pressure in his 'new' engine. Well we spent some more time on it tonight (3rd night this week ;) and made a 'bit' of progress :P
The oil pressure problem was traced back to the block not having the oil pump drive shaft installed in the dizzy hole. Nice way to ИИИИ a engine by missing a $2 part. It probably fell out during one of the engine block's many journeys - first from STOKEB's car, through 3 other owners and finally to Damo. After that we had a light bulb moment. What if we could get the motor running with a new shaft and the crapped out cam and head???? Couldn't hurt considering the motor was technically ИИИИed anyway:P Took a shaft from one of the other busted motors in Damo's garage, popped it in, reset the dizzy, vacumed all the metal shavings out of the head and re-installed the chewed cam and rocker gear. Go to turn it over and......nothing....the motor was just about seized and would barely turn. Not to be deterred by a seized motor, we poured a crap load of oil into each cylinder hoping to loosing the whole thing up. We cranked it without the plugs in for a bit to spread the oil in the bores. It worked a treat. We got the motor fired up on 4 cylinders - kept 2 of the plugs out to make it crank easier. It sounded like a V8 and there was smoke EVERYWHERE lol. We put the other two plugs in and it ran like a dream (except for a vaccum leak somewhere in the manifold). The next step was to take it for a test drive. Everything was going fine until we gave it some stick....Damo hit 3rd gear and 'zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz' then engine cuts out :( Dizzy shaft welded itself to the block.....not happy Jan. Ended up towing the EB home with the trusty EA at 11:30pm....... And now we are back at square one.....Damo needs a new motor : |

...Continuing on from my 'Got Oil Presure' thread, tonight doug came around and he was right, unfortunately it was that bloody rod that sits under the dizzy. It was missing!! :( Anyways doug had this great idea to just wack the shaft in and put it back together again with the grinded down cam and head.
So we cleaned up all the metal shavings chucked the cam and rocker gear back on and reset the timing. The motor would hardly turn over at all though it was almost seized, so we put some oil down the sparky holes and turned it over without plugs for a bit, chucked in 4 plugs and connected the leads up so it would spin easier. She fired up like a champ, sounded crazy running on 4 cyl. So we put the other two leads back in and set the base timing etc and were ready for the test run. So with no bonnet we headed off drove for a couple of minutes and got to a nice strait bit of road where we decided to 'give it a bit' the car pulled great through first and then second then third it bogged down and made like a grinding noise and then stalled. Pulled into a side street and had a look over it, checked for spark... no spark. At this stage we decided to walk home and get the trusty old EA with it's towbar. We didn't have a decent length of rope so we made on up out of some short pieced and a chain. Went back up there and towed the EB home in first gear, the EA loved it and our rope and chain stayed intact. Got back home and pulled the dizzy out, it was fine so we turned it over and the gear that spins the dizzy woudn't budge, must have not liked running with no oil presure the other night and just seized. I think something else let go too and when i put it in gear when we were rolling it made a weird noise like the cranks couldn't spin the flywheel or something. So that's where it stands, it ran great for 5 minutes and we had a bit of fun. It was a ИИИИer when it started and ran good, i'll post up the pictures of the damage tommorrow, and you's will laugh at how it started and actually ran good. Still can't believe that friggen rod wasn't there, a tiny little thing like that and i'm going for motor No 4 now, ahh well i learnt heaps. Take it easy guys, Damo |

Hahah sounds like you had a bit of a laugh in the process anyway. Hopefully you can source a GOOD, WORKING motor soon enough Damo.

That's a crazy story, so close yet so far. At least it's a great learning experience.
I concur with Luke, aim for a really good motor next time and be done with it. |

Why not go to an Auction and buy a recked AU? you will get a half decent motor and some extra bits to save and maybe sell to your mates?
My Son has an AU series 1 and wants to change to series 2 brakes, i will soon be in need of a motor and so he and I are looking for a wrecked AU2 or 3 so we can share the cost |

Sad to hear mate.. At least she was towed back by a falc.
Why not quickly chuck a coil pack setup into her, with an EF ecu?

what would be the point in that BOOSTD ? I imagine it would be a lot of stuffing around. I'll be ringing around a few wreckers tommorrow, i'm after a low K EL motor.

I couldn't believe it when they actually got it started, and that it was running ok. Apart from a massive vacuum leak it sounded like a normal cammed I6. I've got a video of it running just after they got it started for the first time. Maybe Damo will post it up later.

LOL.. funny stuff! I cant believe you guys actually got that thing started! "oil down the cylinders" Doug... you and ur ideas, man they are scary sometimes!
Oh well at least now you can grab an EL engine and just happen to take the head off and check that the head gasket is fine. And while its off accidently get the die grinder out and accidently do a bit of work on the ports. And just to make sure the cam wont cause you issues, just happen to throw in a dev 5 cam. |

Put all your anchors on a trailer and tow 'em down to Pick a Part Damo. They'll give you like $20...that's enough to buy 2 massive KFC meals or 1 massive one for a fat ИИИИ.
Trust me, me and Gilly had some good KFC that day. We're above this. Sundeep |

we replaced the speedo gear in the tranny to a 23 spline i think? the speedo reads almost correct now.. i can't wait to see what gears it has in it. at 100 the car sits on 2100rpm, so i'm guessing 3.45.. |

i read the oil oil pressure thead etc, and have a pretty obvious question as far as i can see.....
howcome you guys started a new engine, and never checked the bloody oil pressure?? or checked the oil pressure light went out, (you should crank it over with ign disconnected to make sure it does) only after a few mins of 0 oil pressure you guys picked up on it.... i just cant understand that. the problem was very easily avoidable |

it wasn't a 'new engine' and we were busy strying to find a huge vacuum leak. The motor was ticky but we thaught it would take a bit for that to stop as it hadn't been started in ages, when it started to actually get louder we checked oil pressure and that's when we realised. Yeah the problem was avoidable, you live and you learn, unfortunately i learnt the hard way this time.
