I'm not as good as I used to be with PCs, but need to know something before I wreck something.
My mates computer recently went in to a shop to get a DVD burner replaced, which was no problem. He also told me he wanted a multi card (Memory Stick SD, etc.) reader in too, but that didn't happen because apparantly they ran out of slots in the motherboard. I got an e-mail from him before saying that the floppy drive has gone missing from the My Computer screen, and he can't access it at all. He also noticed some other settings that had changed since being in the shop. I figure it's something in the BIOS setting that needs changing to access the floppy drive. Am I right, or is it something else?

They may have unplugged the floppy drive and forgot to plug it back in, that would be the first thing I'd check.

check the following.
Floppy power cable is plugged in. Floppy IDE Cable is plugged in correctly to motherboard. Floppy IDE Cable is plugged in correctly to the Floppy drive. Sometimes in older machines it only works one way up, but still fits either way. Bios -> 1st page -> Drive A: (should say 1.44Mb Floppy) if not then select it from the list.

Ok Dumb Puter Questions!
I have no desktop icon visable, and no Toolbar at bottom of screen. The only way to get any programs operating is via ctrl alt delete, thru the task manager?? Fkuc I hate puters!!! : : : : : :

MNM96 if your using XP just CTRL ALT DEL and the file...new task and type explorer that should get u the task bar (start button..) then right click on desktop properties desktop customize desktop.. icons are there
for the floppy drive remember that the ribbon cable almost ALWAYS gets stuffed up with IDE the red side of the ribbon cable is facing the power (4 pin connector) with floppies they have a cross over cable(ribbon has a twist in it) um also if using XP right click my computer then manage then device manager and check if the floppy is even there... hope this helps |

Check bios settings, the shop probably changed some config's for the new drive/upgrade firmware for it whilst installing it.

OK, I've had an update from my mate on this floppy disaster.
Device manager picks up on the drive being there, yet Windows Explorer can't see it. I'm now thinking spyware.

if its spyware just download spybot search and destroy, ad aware, and use Mozilla Firefox from now on or at very least if using xp install SP2 and update it

grab spyware blaster and spyware guard. they are free. they stop the spyware from even being installed in the first place. i've used them for ages now and they work extremely well, i visit alot of sites where you would be likely to pickup spyware and i dont get any.
