Thanks for the link AU Mont, well I think I will go and get a new one aswell and if/when it starts making that noise again then perhaps covering it up.
Im interested in by passing it though, when is the RTA/Police etc ever going to check there?

What rate does it tick at? Could it be mistaken for noisy lifters? I can hear ticking when I go past a kerb or a bush but with the bonnet open it's not obvious where it's coming from (seems more like the bottom of the engine), plus I don't hear any lifter noise at startup before the oil circulates. Could it be my purge cannister?

If noise is still very noticable, then the solenoid is buggered and wrapping it up with wool from a golden sheep wont tame the sound. Get a new one. I remember when i got the new one, i found it like to rest against the plastic guard which amplified the normal quiet tick they do, so i undid a couple screws at the bottom where the plastic guard meets the bar and jammed a sponge in between the solenoid and plastic guard I did this because you cant really position the solenoid away from the guard as its all in a fixed position. Cures:
Wrap the valve in foam. It that does not work likely the valve is faulty and a new one will often fix it regardless of if the foam works or not.
