i've got my eye on a nice manual ED classic and that ef xr6 engine i posted yesterday. it got the gears turning in my head and id love to do it but i dont know how big a job it would be.
i know i would need a manual ef xr6 ecu but are the looms different from ED-EF? i assume they are. also what about engine mounts and the trans bell housing, do they stay the same? and how much would i be getting charged if i dumped the lot on a mechanic? |

bellhousing is the same. engine mounts are different for EF, so use the ED ones (they bolt straight on).
A manual EF XR6 ECU isn't going to help you what-so-ever unless you plan to entirely rewire the whole car to EF Spec :P By far the easiest way is to drop the engine in and use all of the ED wiring, mounts, etc. Basically, just drop the block and head in. Everything will still work this way, and it will be far easier than any other way... Having said that, if you are planning to pay a mechanic to do it, unless the ED engine is stuffed, the gains wouldn't be worth the cost IMO. |

If you want to do it, don't let me stop you! ;)
Just don't expect any HUGE gains from it. The money it would cost (particularly if you paid a mechanic to do the swap) could be spent on cam, head work, etc. and would without doubt yeild MUCH more power. |

Isnt the difference in normal and XR spec only like 8kw? I dont think 8kw is worth the $1000 or so it will cost to fit/buy the engine.

Although in this case he is comparing an ED engine to an EF XR one, so the difference would be more like 16kw. But still not worth it IMO. |

I wouldnt bother. Especially if the engine is low kay to begin with. Change the cam for $130, exhaust system and extractors instead.

Chuck on an XH snorkle for $35 along with the cam and exhaust & you're laughing. I did all of these mods to my ED GLi and it has a shite load more power than stock.

Not worth the hassle of changing the engine, if you must whack a Tickford cam and do a serp belt conversion, it'll be the same anyway.

Just whack the EF top end on the ED motor.
Heaps easier.
